The Yankees lost a heartbreaker in extra innings last night, falling 8-5 to the Rangers to open this 3-game set. They’ll try to regroup tonight with Will Warren on the mound, but the matchup doesn’t get any easier against Nathan Eovaldi and a Texas team that’s quietly heating up at home.
Both clubs are in the thick of the playoff race in their respective divisions, but how these teams have been doing lately paints very different pictures. Even with Aaron Judge leading the offensive charge for the Yankees, it might not be enough to get around Eovaldi’s stuff.
Team | Run Line | Total | Moneyline |
---|---|---|---|
NY Yankees Will Warren | +1.5 -187 | O 8.5 -102 | +109 |
TEX Rangers Nathan Eovaldi | -1.5 +152 | U 8.5 -120 | -133 |
Tonight’s first pitch will happen at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas — a stadium that’s been playing pitcher-friendly all year. The total for this one is set at 8.5 runs, with the under priced a little better than the over at -120, hinting at another low-scoring affair. The Rangers are slight -137 favorites on the moneyline, while the Yankees come back at +113. On the run line, Texas is +149 to cover -1.5 runs, while New York is -182 to keep it within a run.
Looking at who’s kicking things off on the bump, this is a lopsided matchup on paper. Nathan Eovaldi is having a spectacular year as he’s gone 9-3 with a 1.49 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 105 strikeouts in 103 innings. He’s allowed just 5 HRs all season, showing elite command and an ability to miss barrels. He’s also been particularly tough at home, helping lead the Rangers to 7 straight wins in Arlington. He’s a tough one to crack, and if he can put up 6-7 solid innings, it could be too much for the Yankees to get the win.
Meanwhile, Will Warren has been relatively inconsistent. He’s 6-5 with a 4.64 ERA and 1.43 WHIP, and he’s allowed 12 taters in 110.2 innings. That’s a stark contrast to Eovaldi. Warren does rack up strikeouts on a regular basis with 128 Ks, but he’s been vulnerable when facing strong lineups — especially ones with patience and power like Texas.
The Yankees are undeniably in a tough stretch. They’ve lost 4 games in a row and 5 of their last 6, including a weekend sweep by the Marlins. They’re now 60-53 on the season and sliding further behind Toronto and Boston in the race for the AL East. Even with a lineup that leads the majors in home runs with 181 and ranks 2nd in runs scored with 584, the offense has cooled off during this slump, and they’ll need to find a way to break the cycle.
The bright spot continues to be Aaron Judge, who’s putting up MVP-caliber numbers. To date, he has 37 home runs, 85 RBIs, and a .342 average with an eye-popping .711 SLG. But beyond Judge, the rest of the lineup has been fairly inconsistent, and their pitching hasn’t done them any favors lately. The team ERA sits at 4.08, good for 17th in the majors, and their WHIP of 1.26 shows a tendency to allow too many baserunners.
On top of that, Globe Life Field is a tough place to get the bats going, and that could be trouble for a Yankees team looking for a spark to break out of the slump.
While Texas still sits at just 4.5 games behind Houston in the AL West, its form is at least trending in the right direction. They’re 59-55 overall and looking more like the team that made a deep playoff run last year. Their recent home dominance, where they’ve won 7 straight at Globe Life, has come thanks to dominant pitching.
The Rangers own the lowest team ERA in baseball with a 3.27 and are holding opponents to a .226 OBA. That’s also the best in the league. They don’t score much as they’re sitting with just 4.1 runs per game, good for 24th in MLB, and their team average of .232 ranks 28th. Those numbers would turn off most bettors, but their style works when Eovaldi is on the mound.
Corey Seager leads the team with 16 dingers, while Adolis Garcia has driven in 63 RBIs. But this team isn’t built on offense — it’s built on controlling the tempo of the game, avoiding big innings, and winning low-scoring battles in the trenches. That’s exactly what they did last night and what they’ll look to repeat again tonight.
Everything points to Texas in this one, and the bookmakers seem to agree. They’ve got the pitching edge with Eovaldi, the momentum from last night’s comeback win, and the comfort of a home ballpark where they’ve won 7 straight. It just goes to show that everything is working for them.
On the other side of the diamond, the Yankees look flat. Their rotation is giving up too many runs, the bullpen hasn’t held onto leads, and outside of Judge, their offense has gone ice cold. Will Warren has the stuff to compete, but against a patient lineup and a pitcher who won’t give them free runs, it’s tough to see New York snapping out of its funk in Game 2 of this series..
Eovaldi’s form and the Rangers’ home streak make this a strong value play even if we’re only banking it at -137. The under 8.5 is also worth a look, given the pitching matchup and the park factors in play, but the moneyline is the safer side.
