Although the 2024 Bowl season kicked off on Saturday, the first game featuring a Power 4 conference team will kick off tonight when the No. 25 ranked Memphis Tigers (10-2) play the West Virginia University Mountaineers (6-6) in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl.
Memphis was among the best teams in the AAC, losing only to Navy and UTSA this season. The Tigers finished the year with a win over Tulane – the Green Wave’s only AAC loss during the regular season – and have momentum heading into Tuesday night’s game.
West Virginia had no momentum this season. The Mountaineers were 5-4 after their second two-game winning streak, but losses to Baylor and Texas Tech relegated WVU to a 6-6 finish and ultimately finished off Neal Brown’s tenure as head football coach.
Will the Tigers finish the job and earn their 11th win of the season, or can WVU stave off a losing season with their first victory over a top-25 team this season? We’ll answer that question and provide our three favorite player prop bets for the Frisco Bowl.
Senior Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan is looking to go out with a bang on Tuesday in the Frisco Bowl. The four-year signal-caller has completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 3,208 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2024.
The Mountaineers play in the Big 12, a conference known for high-octane offenses. Henigan may not pilot a Power 4 conference offense, but the quarterback is among the best in the nation. Expect him to surpass 271 yards and cover this player prop bet tonight.
WVU quarterback Garrett Greene has had an up-and-down season in 2024. The 5-foot-11 senior has thrown for 1,972 yards and 13 touchdowns against 11 interceptions in the Mountaineers’ rocky season.
Memphis has yielded just over 100 yards per game to runners this season, and the Tigers have a strong running defense. Still, expect the Mountaineers’ signal-caller – who’s run for 656 yards this season – to finish with over 63 yards and cover this player prop bet.
Memphis senior Roc Taylor has been phenomenal this season. On the year, he’s caught a team-best 61 passes for 834 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Tigers’ aerial attack and become Henigan’s favored target.
WVU is giving up huge chunks of yards defensively to passing teams, and Memphis will find gaping holes to work on Tuesday. Expect Taylor to easily surpass this player prop mark tonight in the Frisco Bowl.
Interim head coach Chad Scott does not know his future with the Mountaineers as former coach Rich Rodriguez will return to West Virginia in 2025. Scott – who served as the offensive coordinator this year – has been praised for his high-energy and positive approach to this role.
While his unit performed well in scoring over 29 points per game, Scott’s counterparts defensively were not up to the task this season. WVU allowed 31 points per contest, and the Mountaineers gave up more than 268 yards passing on average this season.
The upheaval at WVU could make this game go in one of two directions: either the Mountaineers will come fired up and make this a close game, or Memphis will beat the Mountaineers handily. Either way, expect the score to be over the 60.5 total point mark oddsmakers have placed on this game.
