The final Monday Night Football game for the 2024 NFL regular season kicks off tonight when the Detroit Lions (13-2) head west for a rematch of the NFC Championship game last season against the San Francisco 49ers (6-9).
Detroit is locked into the playoffs after their best regular season in history. But the surging Minnesota Vikings have kept them from locking in home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, and a loss either Monday night or next week against their NFC North rivals could send the Lions on the road for much of the postseason.
The playoffs aren’t something on the minds of the 49ers. After three straight appearances, San Francisco is retooling this season as the franchise has dealt with significant injuries throughout the past year. The 49ers can still play spoiler, however, as they face a team they beat last season to make their eighth Super Bowl appearance.
Will the Lions finally have the 49ers’ number on Monday night, or can San Francisco continue to spoil Detroit’s postseason aspirations? We’ll cover that and our three favorite player prop bets for tonight’s final Monday Night Football game of the season.
Detroit quarterback Jared Goff is one of the best quarterbacks in the league this season. The 30-year-old veteran has thrown for 4,095 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 15 games thus far.
On Monday night, he’ll meet a team that has surrendered more than 250 passing yards only twice in 2024. The 49ers have been among the league’s best against the pass, and Goff should find out why tonight. Expect the signal-caller to finish under 250 passing yards and fail to cover this player prop bet.
San Francisco tight end George Kittle has set himself up for a fourth consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl this year with his strong season. Through 13 games, Kittle has caught 68 receptions for 967 yards and eight touchdowns, all serving as team-best figures in 2024.
Only one tight end has posted more than 60 receiving yards against the Lions this season. Still, with this game potentially setting up as a shoot-out (see below), expect the 49ers to game plan for ways to get Kittle involved and help him meet this player prop mark.
The Lions have a strong two-headed running back monster in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Combined, this duo has run for 1,931 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns during the 2024 NFL regular season.
On Monday night, Gibbs will carry the workload as Montgomery continues to rest his sprained MCL. That means the normal workload share will go primarily to Gibbs, giving the former first-round draft pick in 2023 an opportunity to shine in this primetime game.
San Francisco has one of the best defenses in the NFL, holding teams to the second-fewest yards per game this season. Their weakness has been in the running game as the 49ers are a middle-of-the-pack team in that regard. Expect the Lions to exploit the 49ers’ running game and allow Gibbs to achieve this player prop bet.
The 49ers may not have much to play for, but the team currently owns the No. 11 selection for the 2025 NFL Draft. San Francisco cannot improve their status with a pair of losses to finish the season but wins against either Detroit or Arizona next week can push the 49ers outside the top 15 picks.
Still, expect San Francisco to be playing for pride after reaching the Super Bowl last season on Monday night. With the offensive weapons they possess, the 49ers can make this a game. While Detroit should ultimately win this game, a 3.5-point spread may be too much for Monday’s contest. Take the over on the points as both teams can and should score in bunches.
