One of the most intriguing Opening Day matchups on the slate sends the Cleveland Guardians to T-Mobile Park to face the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 10:10 PM ET on MLB.TV. This is a battle between two of the better-run franchises in baseball — a Guardians club that has made the postseason in consecutive years against a Mariners team that PECOTA projects as the most likely American League team to reach the World Series in 2026. It’s a heavyweight clash to open the year, and the pitching matchup might be the best on the board tonight.
Both teams come in shorthanded to some degree. Cleveland is missing outfielder George Valera (calf) and reliever Hunter Gaddis (forearm), while Seattle is without shortstop J.P. Crawford (shoulder) and rotation arm Bryce Miller (oblique) to open the year. Neither absence is crippling, but they add a wrinkle to what should be a tightly contested game.
Seattle is installed as a -172 to -193 moneyline favorite at home, with Cleveland coming back at +155 to +159. About 74-85% of public money is on the Mariners, which makes sense given the home field advantage and the matchup dynamics. The run line is tight: Cleveland is +1.5 at -149, while Seattle -1.5 is paying +124 to +135 — suggesting oddsmakers don’t expect a blowout.
The most interesting number here is the total, set at just 6.5. That’s the lowest total on the entire Opening Day slate, and for good reason — two of the best pitchers in the American League are taking the mound. The over is drawing heavy action (90-92% of bets), but sharp money is leaning under, with Action Network’s Sean Zerillo specifically backing the under at +102. When the public is pounding the over at that rate and the sharp side is on the other side, that’s worth noting.
Logan Gilbert gets the Opening Day start for Seattle, and it’s a deserved honor. The 28-year-old right-hander has quietly become one of the best pitchers in the AL — posting a 3.27 ERA with elite command and a high strikeout rate over the past two seasons. He’s the kind of pitcher who doesn’t give you free bases, attacks the zone early, and keeps the ball in the park. Gilbert finished his spring tuneup strong and is primed to set the tone for what Seattle hopes is a championship-caliber rotation.
Opposing him is Tanner Bibee, Cleveland’s Opening Day starter and the unquestioned leader of their pitching staff. The left-handed-throwing righty (bats left, throws right) has been one of the more underrated starters in the AL over the past two years — a 3.40 ERA pitcher who competes every single time out with a deep arsenal and excellent feel for the strike zone. Bibee held his own in a tough spring and arrives healthy, which is exactly what Cleveland needed.
Seattle’s lineup is legitimately loaded despite losing Crawford. Cal Raleigh — who smashed a record 60 home runs last season — is the headliner and one of the most feared hitters in baseball. Julio Rodríguez is finally healthy and primed for a monster full season. Randy Arozarena (27 HR, 31 SB last year) gives them another dangerous presence, and offseason acquisition Brendan Donovan from St. Louis adds a professional, gritty bat at third base. Without Crawford, rookie shortstop Leo Rivas and young second baseman Cole Young slide in — both question marks against a veteran like Bibee.
Cleveland’s offense leans heavily on José Ramírez, who remains one of the most consistent hitters in baseball year in and year out. Kyle Manzardo (power upside at first), Steven Kwan (contact machine in left), and newcomer Rhys Hoskins (three spring home runs, excellent spring slash line) give the Guardians legitimate punch. But this offense historically scores through pitching and defense — they aren’t going to light up Gilbert for five runs. The question is whether they can scratch out two or three.
The bullpens are worth monitoring too. Seattle closer Andrés Muñoz is one of the nastiest relievers in the game — triple-digit heat with a devastating slider. Cleveland’s Cade Smith is a legitimate weapon at the back of the pen. Both teams can protect a late lead, which reinforces the under.
This game screams under. Two elite starters with deep arsenals, cold early-season conditions in Seattle, lineups that are either contact-oriented (Cleveland) or missing their starting shortstop (Seattle). The over is getting pounded by the public at 90%+, but the sharp money is clearly on the under — and there’s a reason the total is only 6.5 to begin with.
On the side, Seattle is the right team to be on at home with Gilbert going. But -185 on the moneyline is a lot of chalk to lay. The smarter play is finding value elsewhere in this game rather than juicing up on the favorite.
Gilbert and Bibee are two of the best pitchers in the AL, and this game has all the hallmarks of a low-scoring, chess-match affair. Getting plus-money on the under in a game where the sharp side is clearly aligned that way is too good to pass up. Take the under, let the two aces do their thing, and collect when neither team cracks four runs.
