Coming off the drama and intensity of the PGA Championship, the PGA Tour heads back to Texas for another showdown at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
This historic venue is one of the longest-running courses on Tour, and it will challenge players differently than Quail Hollow did last week!
Colonial Country Club is a Par 70, measuring 7,289 yards, that demands precision and accuracy more than power. With tree-lined fairways, small bent grass greens, and dense rough make accuracy off the tee and sharp iron play critical.
Players that have success usually stay out of trouble, avoid bogeys, and putt well. Here are the three key stats that correlate most with success at Colonial:
● Strokes Gained Putting: Ranks 13th in importance on Tour.
● Proximity to the Hole: Ranks 3rd, underscoring the value of dialed-in approach shots. Avoiding the rough is key to hitting these greens in regulation.
● Driving Accuracy: More important than distance, players who find the fairway and avoid the rough will have cleaner looks at their 2nd shot.
Cole has struggled to generate birdies at Colonial, recording four straight rounds under 3.5 birdies, and missing the cut in back-to-back appearances here.
The tight driving lanes and precision-required greens have done a good job at keeping his scoring abilities down.
Kim is under 3.5 birdies in six straight rounds at this course, including all four during his T6 run in 2023.
His game suits steady, strategic play, but his history at Colonial is more of shooting par, and avoiding the big numbers.
Spaun has gone under this line in 7 of his last 8 rounds at Colonial and has stayed under in the first round in each of his last three appearances.
While Spaun is a risky one as he ranks high in greens in regulation % for the season, it’s very hard to hit these greens with a consistently high percentage, as he has shown us himself.
Bezuidenhout has put together quite a run at Colonial. He’s posted three straight top-21 finishes here, and has made the cut in three straight and 8 of his last 11 events overall.
His elite putting makes him a great fit for these small greens, as the rest of his game lacks behind. With his history here, he has to be a play to continue his run!
Glover has been solid at Colonial, with three straight cuts made, including two top-12 finishes in the last three events.
He’s also made 6 of his last 7 cuts on Tour, showing he has been in consistent form. Glover’s ball striking is elite, and when his putter shows up he can make the cut in any field!
Hall’s 3rd place finish 2 years ago here, followed up with a missed cut last season, leaves me running to the window to lock this one in. I love the bounce back spots and Hall has been playing very well as of late.
He’s made seven straight cuts and is riding the confidence of a T19 at the PGA Championship. He fits this course well if he can navigate his way to the greens as one of the top putters on tour!
