A UCLA legend took over the program last year in DeShaun Foster. Things looked bleak after a 1-5 start, but a 4-2 finish to the season gave the fans something to hold onto going into the 2025 campaign. However, they landed a tough schedule, and increasing their win total will not be easy.
One way to help things get better is by getting an established passer in the transfer portal, and that is exactly what Foster did by getting Nico Imaleava after he left Tennessee. That said, he will be working with an offensive line that is mainly all new faces and a bunch of pass catchers that lack experience.
Jalen Berger will be touting the rock along with Cal transfer Jaivian Thomas, which Foster hopes can take the pressure off Nico a bit. While the defensive front returns a bulk of starters, replacing Carson Schwesinger at the linebacker position will not be an easy task.
Luke Fickell was once the darling of the country in terms of potential coaching carousels but after just a 13-13 record in Wisconsin since joining, his light seems to be diminishing. The 7 lost season last year was the 1st losing season for the Badgers in 25 years.
Fickell is hoping his defense can be a catalyst for his offense this season. They were near the bottom of the Big 10 against the run last year, so he went out and grabbed some transfers that he believes will help out up front.
If the defense can get tougher, it will help the offense get back to a run 1st attack. Both Dilin Jones and Darrion Dupree should get chances at running back while Maryland transfer Billy Edwards will take over the starting QB role.
Coach Schiano is hoping to make this season his 3rd straight winning season in a row. However, playing OSU, PSU, and Oregon will make that idea a tough one to accomplish. The loss of 1200+ rusher Kyle Monangai will make the process even that much tougher.
Antwan Raymond and possibly CJ Campbell from FAU could make the transition from Monangai a bit easier. Athan Kaliakmanis is back under center after tossing almost 20 TDs and 2700 yards last season.
KJ Duff and Ian Strong are likely to be his top targets as they both return this year. Linebacker Dariel Djabome will be the focal point of the defense, but he will need help around him from inexperienced sources.
The Terps finished a sad 4-8 last year after trips to bowl games in the previous seasons. Conference play was ugly as almost all their losses came by over 2 touchdowns. Mike Locksley is going to have his hands full with turning this thing around after last season.
Justyn Martin was brought in from UCLA but is getting pushed by Malik Washington. Whoever gets the job will have to navigate his way with an offensive line that was bad last year and does not seem to have made big moves in the portal. They also had their top receivers leave as well as most of their run game.
The defense was nearly non-existent last season, but it is overhauled this year with just 1 returning starter. Maybe a fresh start will help DC Ted Monachino find a way to make this unit productive.
The 4-8 record last year was a stark contrast to their 8-5 finish the season prior. Like UCLA, Northwestern went out and made a big splash in the transfer portal. They grabbed Preston Stone from SMU and most believe this is the main reason to be excited for the Wildcats in 2025.
Stone was hampered by injuries last season but is getting a fresh start at a program that does not have enormous expectations. He gets Griffin Wilde to throw to after he came over from South Dakota State along with an offensive line that is filled with most experienced starters.
On defense, they will rely on a capable defensive front. The linebacker and secondary will need to take strides early but that will be a tough task.
After almost going winless last season, Purdue decided to move on from head coach Ryan Walters. Barry Odom was brought in after running the show at UNLV the last 2 seasons. He was able to retain QB Ryan Browne after he was initially heading to UNC and is now likely to get his job back here.
Browne’s offensive line is going to be a work in progress and the wide out room is nearly bare. VT transfer Malachi Thomas and Devin Mockobee will be the stars in the backfield and could be relied on heavily due to the lack of star power through the air.
The defense is completely new with not 1 returning starter. However, the previous group allowed almost 40ppg, so how much worse can this group be? Time will tell.
