Knicks vs. 76ers Prediction Markets: Champions Get the Slight Edge in Philadelphia

The defending champion New York Knicks head to Philadelphia on Friday night for a 7:30 PM ET tip at Xfinity Mobile Arena, and prediction markets see this one as a near coin flip with a slight lean toward the visitors. The game streams on Amazon Prime Video and counts toward NBA Cup group play.

What the Prediction Markets Are Saying

Prediction markets work a lot like a crowd-sourced forecast: traders buy and sell shares on an outcome, and the price reflects how likely the crowd thinks that outcome is. Right now the Knicks sit at about 53.5 percent to win, while the 76ers are priced at roughly 46.5 percent. That is a thin edge, and it is a bit of a surprise given that Philadelphia is the home team with the better record.

Trading has been busy too, with roughly $168,000 changing hands on this matchup over the last 24 hours. Lots of volume usually means lots of opinions, so the price is worth taking seriously even if it is not a guarantee of anything.

Why the Market Leans Toward the Champions

New York is the reigning champion, having won its first title in 53 years, and traders may simply be giving the benefit of the doubt to the team that finished on top. The Knicks are 2-3 and sit eighth in the East, but they have won two of their last three after a three-game skid, and they are averaging about 109.8 points per game while allowing about 109.6.

The sportsbook picture is similar. DraftKings, as listed by ESPN, has the Knicks at -122 on the moneyline and the 76ers at +102, which also points to a slight New York lean. Lines have moved this week, so it is worth checking the latest numbers before tip-off. If you want a refresher on how those numbers work, our live NBA odds page is a good place to start.

The Case for Philadelphia

The 76ers have the better record at 4-1, good for second in the East, and they have won four of their last five. They are scoring about 110.8 points per game while holding opponents to about 107.4, with a defensive rating around 103.3. Not every model agrees with the market, either: ESPN Analytics gives Philadelphia a 56.2 percent chance, and another model puts the 76ers near 57 percent, even though the sportsbook market with the vig removed lands close to 50-50.

This is also a new-look Philadelphia group. The starting five now features LeBron James and Jaylen Brown alongside Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, and the team has had a few games to get used to each other. On the injury front, Ariel Hukporti is out for the season with an Achilles injury, while Jabari Walker (knee) and Tacko Fall (quadriceps) are listed as day to day.

A Quick Look Back at Opening Night

These two teams already met once this season, and it did not go the way New York fans hoped. On October 20, on the night the Knicks raised their championship banner and received their rings at Madison Square Garden, Philadelphia won 106-100. Maxey led the way with 28 points, LeBron James made his Philadelphia debut with 11, and Brown hit a buzzer-beater in the third quarter.

That result is one reason the home side has fans optimistic, but one game in October does not settle much. The Knicks will have had time to digest that loss and will be looking to even the season series.

What to Watch Friday Night

ESPN lists Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns for New York, along with Brown, Embiid and Maxey for Philadelphia, among the players most likely to score first. Keep an eye on whether the 76ers can again slow the Knicks down defensively, and whether New York can shake off a slow start to the season on the road. If you are curious how this fits into the bigger title picture, you can also check the NBA Championship futures.

The Bottom Line

The prediction market has the Knicks as slight favorites at about 53.5 percent, while analytics models lean toward the 76ers and the sportsbook consensus is close to even. In other words, the experts are split, which usually makes for a fun game to watch. Remember that market prices are estimates of probability, not predictions, and anyone wagering should do so responsibly.
