Anthony Colandrea Signs Deal to Return to Nebraska, Giving Huskers a Futures Boost

Nebraska has locked down its quarterback for another season. Anthony Colandrea, the dual-threat transfer who has steered the Cornhuskers to a 5-2 start, signed a deal Friday to return to Lincoln in 2027 for his final year of college eligibility, according to his agent, Noah Reisenfeld of 21 Sports & Entertainment. The agreement arrives with Nebraska set to host Washington on Halloween night, and it gives the futures market something new to chew on.

Colandrea is in his first season in Lincoln after stops at Virginia (2023-24) and UNLV (2025). He will use a fifth year of eligibility under the NCAA’s “5-for-5” ruling instead of heading to the NFL. Financial terms have not been disclosed, though On3 reports he is expected to be one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in college football. The negotiations had been going on for several weeks, and the two sides made it official Friday morning.

Why Nebraska Moved Fast on Colandrea

The timing is not an accident. Earlier this month, head coach Matt Rhule said several SEC programs were already calling his quarterback well ahead of the transfer portal window, which opens Jan. 4 and closes nine days later. Rhule made it clear he did not want a narrative taking hold that Colandrea lacked support in Lincoln, noting that kind of story has hurt the program before. Locking in a signature before the portal opens takes that threat off the table, and CBS Sports describes the deal as the first known player contract extension in Nebraska program history.

On the field, Colandrea has given Nebraska a different look than last year’s team. He has thrown for 1,570 yards and 14 touchdowns against four interceptions while completing roughly 62.6 percent of his passes, and he has added more than 330 rushing yards and multiple scores on the ground. He ranks third in the Big Ten in total offense at 271.9 yards per game. As a team, Nebraska is averaging 194.4 rushing yards per game through seven contests, up from 125.0 at the same point last season, and the defense is allowing just 15.4 points per game.

The Huskers opened 5-0 under Rhule before back-to-back three-point losses to Indiana and Oregon this month dented their Big Ten title hopes. They enter Saturday at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference, with Washington (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) coming to Memorial Stadium for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff.

What It Means for Nebraska’s Betting Outlook

Quarterback continuity is one of the quietest but most reliable inputs in preseason pricing, and a returning starter with proven dual-threat production is exactly what oddsmakers like to see. Nebraska was listed at 200-1 to win the national championship in August, and the Huskers have not been priced like a contender at any point this season. In mid-September they were posted at +40000 to win the title and +10000 to win the Big Ten, and by mid-October one odds tracker showed them near +60000 for the national title and +15000 for the conference crown, with a season win total of 6.5. Those numbers will be reshuffled in the offseason, but the Colandrea news removes one of the largest variables from Nebraska’s 2027 price.

Expect the market to treat this as a stability premium rather than a jolt. A futures move in late October is rarely dramatic because the 2027 boards are still thin and the portal cycle has not started. Where it could matter most is in early 2027 win-total and Big Ten odds, once books can account for Nebraska’s returning production against everyone else’s portal losses. Teams that keep a productive starter at the sport’s most important position typically get a modest bump relative to peers still searching for answers.

The deal also changes how Nebraska can sell itself to other players. Knowing Colandrea is back as the starter makes the Huskers a more attractive destination for portal targets and a stronger pitch for returning players. A better roster means a better power rating, and power ratings drive point spreads and win totals more than any single headline does.

Saturday’s Line Against Washington

The immediate betting question is Saturday night. Nebraska is a 7.5-point favorite against Washington with a moneyline around -318 to -345 depending on the book, and the total is set at 50.5. The line opened at Nebraska by 9.5 earlier in the week, so the market has shaved a couple of points off the Huskers’ number. Nebraska is 6-1 against the spread this season while Washington is 2-5, a gap that tells you bettors have been rewarded for backing the Huskers all year.

Colandrea’s contract has no direct effect on the spread, but it removes any distraction from a Nebraska locker room that spent part of the month talking about his future. If he plays the way he has all season, the combination of his legs and the run game is the thing to watch against a Washington defense that will need to account for both.

For bettors thinking beyond this weekend, the takeaway is simple. Nebraska is not a title contender on the futures board, but it now has the most important piece of its 2027 roster secured, and that is the kind of fact that quietly shapes win totals and conference odds months before anyone places a bet. Lines move on information, and Friday delivered some.
