Seattle owns the better record and the hotter offense, but Calgary has the building, the power play, and a goaltending situation that could flip this game.
Quick take:
- Pick: Seattle Kraken moneyline
- Why: The Kraken are scoring 3.85 goals a game, while the Flames are managing just 2.33 and allowing 3.75.
- The number to watch: Calgary’s .876 team save percentage
The Seattle Kraken (8-4-1, 17 points) visit the Calgary Flames (5-7-0, 10 points) at Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night, with puck drop set for 8:00 PM ET. Seattle sits third in the Pacific, while Calgary has just 10 points.
These Pacific Division rivals have already met twice this month, and neither game was close. Seattle won 6-1 at the Saddledome on October 1 and 6-1 again at home on October 4. Those scores will not repeat themselves, but they frame what the market is dealing with tonight.
Despite a four-win gap in the standings, the market sees this as close to a coin flip. DraftKings had Seattle at -115 and Calgary at -105 on the moneyline Friday morning, with the total at 6.5. That is a tiny premium for the road team, and it reflects Calgary’s home-ice edge and a recent four-game winning streak that ended with a 4-0 loss in Edmonton on Wednesday.
The real question for bettors is whether a -115 price on the better team is fair. Seattle’s underlying numbers are not spotless, which keeps the line tight, but the gap in scoring and goaltending makes the Kraken side the more defensible one. Calgary’s recent run is worth a closer look. The Flames won four straight at home against Carolina, Minnesota, Detroit, and Toronto, allowing just 1.25 goals a game over that stretch, with Devin Cooley in net for all four. That is the point where this matchup gets complicated: the goalie who powered the streak left Wednesday’s game in Edmonton with a lower-body injury, and the Flames lost 4-0.
The Kraken are scoring 3.85 goals per game this season, and the top line of Bobby McMann, Matty Beniers, and Jordan Eberle anchors a first power-play unit that also features Chandler Stephenson and Vince Dunn. Beniers, the Kraken’s No. 10, drives that group at center. Kaapo Kakko has been the team’s most productive forward early, with 10 points through the Kraken’s first 12 games, and rookie center Berkly Catton has posted the best possession numbers among Seattle regulars.
Seattle is not without problems. The Kraken penalty kill is running at just 67.6%, and they are being outshot, generating 25.3 shots per game while allowing 31.0. Jared McCann, Ryan Lindgren, Jake O’Brien, and Jacob Melanson are all on injured reserve.
Calgary is scoring just 2.33 goals per game while allowing 3.75, a goal differential no amount of home ice cures.
Calgary’s offense runs through Joel Farabee, who leads the team in points, and Matt Coronato, who has piled up assists. Matvei Gridin has been a possession-driving force, but the team as a whole simply is not finishing enough chances. The Flames do have the better power play on paper at 29.0%, and an 83.8% penalty kill is a real strength, which is why this is not a lopsided call.
The goalie matchup is the wild card. Dustin Wolf, who came on in relief when Devin Cooley went down with a lower-body injury Wednesday, carries a 4.81 GAA and an .839 save percentage across six appearances. Cooley is listed day-to-day. On the Seattle side, Joey Daccord is the projected starter, and his .882 save percentage is shaky, though Philipp Grubauer has been steadier. Whoever starts, the Flames’ .876 team save percentage is the number that decides whether Seattle’s offense feasts again.
One more wrinkle for anyone betting the total: Seattle’s recent games have been loose. Over their last ten, the Kraken are scoring 3.80 goals a game while allowing 3.80, and results like an 8-3 loss in Florida and a 5-4 win over Toronto show how quickly these games can open up. Calgary’s 2.33 goals per game pulls the other way, which is why 6.5 looks like a fair number rather than an obvious side. Calgary’s team shooting percentage is also sitting at 8.1%, so some positive regression is coming, but it is unlikely to arrive against a team that has already beaten the Flames twice by five goals.
Seattle has won the first two meetings by a combined 12-2, owns the better offense, and has the more reliable goaltending floor. Calgary’s power play and home crowd will keep it competitive, but the Flames have to find offense they have not shown consistently this season. Take the Kraken to grind this one out.
The pick:
At -115, the Kraken offer fair value as the team with the stronger offense and better record, and the price is only that low because of the goalie uncertainty on the other side.
