Tips for Creating a Winning DFS Lineup Strategy

Crafting a winning lineup is both an art and a science. Fortunately, we’ve got some strategic tips to help you build the best DFS lineup possible.

Understanding the Scoring System

First and foremost, know the scoring system of the platform you’re playing on.

Different DFS platforms have different scoring rules, and what works on one may not work on another.

On top of having different scoring rules, some platforms have different games altogether.  For example, Vivid Picks is more of a pick ’em style DFS platform, whereas DK and FD are a bit more traditional.

With these traditional DFS platforms, you can leverage scoring rules to your advantage. You can find a player that excels in a particular stat category and maximize that to your advantage.

Tailor your strategy to maximize points based on these scoring rules.

Research is Key

So many DFS players just set it and forget it when it comes to their lineup. There’s a bit more than just picking what YOU think are the best players.

These are a few areas to hone in on, starting with the most important—

  • Player Performance. Dive deep into player statistics. Look at recent performance trends, not just overall season stats. A key player might be hot or cold at the moment.
  • Matchups Matter. Analyze the matchups. A weaker opponent can mean a big day for a skilled player. This requires you to dig a little deeper than what you can find in most DFS lineup selection tools.
  • Injuries and Opportunities. Stay updated on injuries. An injured starter can open the door for a backup to shine. This is a quick win that can separate you from the rest of the league.

Value Picks and Sleepers

Value picks are players who are priced lower but have the potential to score high points.

Identifying these players allows you to allocate a budget to high-cost, high-reward players.

Sleepers or less popular players who might have breakout performances can also give you an edge.

Our experts here at HelloRookie are constantly dropping the latest picks based on their research. They usually find stellar sleepers and value picks and post them every day.

Diversify Your Lineup

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Diversifying your lineup reduces risk. It’s a lot like investing in the real world.

If one player underperforms, it won’t sink your entire lineup. This is especially important in tournaments where you’re competing against a large number of entries, or you have multiple games going on.

For example, let’s say you have five lineups spreading different games. Sure, you think Russell Wilson will crush it this Sunday, but what if he doesn’t? Is he slotted as your QB1 across all five lineups?

If he is, then you lost points on all of those lineups.

Pay Attention to the Weather

In sports like football and baseball, weather can significantly impact performance.

Wind, rain, and extreme temperatures can change the dynamics of the game. Adjust your lineup accordingly.

Some teams and players thrive in adverse weather. Take the 49ers, for example. Despite being from Golden Gate City, they have a killer record in the colder games.

So, if San Francisco is playing up north in Buffalo or Green Bay, don’t be so quick to write them off.

On the other side, some teams perform dismally in adverse weather.

Utilize the Flex Spot Wisely

In many DFS formats, such as DraftKings and FanDuel, you have a flex spot that can be filled by a player from multiple positions.

Use this spot strategically based on matchups and player performances.

We like to fill this slot with a sleeper — if you can find one. It’s like getting points you weren’t necessarily expecting, but they add a decent boost to propel you over your opponents.

Stay Updated Until the Deadline

Last-minute changes can make or break your DFS lineup. Here’s how to stay on top of it—

  • Injury Reports. Monitor them closely. A player’s status can change rapidly, impacting not only their performance but also that of their teammates.
  • Weather Updates. As previously discussed, weather can be a game-changer. Be ready to adjust your lineup accordingly.
  • Follow Reliable Sources. Use social media, sports news sites, and official team announcements to get the latest information.

Staying informed and adaptable until the last minute gives you an edge over competitors who set their lineup and forget it.

Balance Between High-Risk and Safe Plays

Creating a winning DFS lineup is about finding the right balance. This involves taking a look at your risk tolerance and developing a lineup that will set you over the competition.

  • High-Risk/High-Reward Players. These players can be inconsistent, but when they perform, they perform big. Including one or two can significantly boost your total points.
  • Consistent Performers. Balance your lineup with players known for their steady performance. They might not have the same ceiling, but their floor is higher, ensuring a base level of points.
  • Diversification. Mix players from different teams and games. This approach reduces the impact of any single game’s outcome on your entire lineup.

Crush Your Competition with These Tips

Creating a winning DFS lineup requires a mix of thorough research, strategic thinking, and, sometimes, a bit of luck.

Experiment with different strategies, learn from your experiences and keep adapting.

Don’t get frustrated if you follow these DFS lineup tips and don’t win out. Likewise, if you destroy the competition, don’t get too excited either. There are always curve balls thrown in there, and other players are using their own techniques to beat you.
