Belichick’s North Carolina Falls to Syracuse 31-30 in OT, Failing to Cover as 8.5-Point Favorite

Bill Belichick and North Carolina watched a double-digit lead disappear on Saturday night, falling 31-30 to Syracuse in overtime at Kenan Stadium after the Orange converted a two-point try to win it. The Tar Heels entered as 8.5-point favorites, so the loss was an outright upset and a failed cover. It dropped UNC to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, just as the schedule turns toward No. 1 Miami.

North Carolina had arrived on a two-game winning streak built on signature wins at Pittsburgh (21-17) and at Duke (24-20). Syracuse arrived at 2-4 and winless in ACC play, having lost 11 straight conference games. The market treated the night as a bounce-back opportunity for the Tar Heels. The Orange had other ideas.

How North Carolina Let a 10-Point Lead Slip Away

The start looked like the script the oddsmakers expected. Quarterback Billy Edwards completed his first 11 passes for 99 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown to Jordan Shipp, and the Tar Heels scored on their first two drives to lead 10-0 after one quarter. Syracuse trimmed it to 10-7 on a 2-yard run by Ahmad Miller, and North Carolina stretched the margin again early in the third quarter when Demon June ripped off a 25-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1 to make it 20-10.

Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli, back in the lineup for his first start since a Sept. 17 loss to Pittsburgh, then hit Umari Hatcher on a 76-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-17 with 11:01 left. UNC drove to the Syracuse 4-yard line but settled for a 22-yard Rece Verhoff field goal. Tylik Hill scored on a 3-yard run with 1:54 remaining, and a missed extra point left the game tied at 23-23 and sent it to overtime.

North Carolina went first in the extra session and scored on a 3-yard touchdown catch by June. Calvin Russell III answered with a 4-yard touchdown reception, and Syracuse went for the win. Angeli found Russell again on the two-point conversion, and after a lengthy review the call on the field stood. Edwards finished with a season-high 271 yards and two touchdowns on 27-of-44 passing, and Shipp had 102 yards on eight catches. Angeli completed 20 of 34 passes for 256 yards and two scores, and Miller ran for 125 yards on 30 carries.

Belichick kept his postgame press conference to about three minutes. “They made a couple more plays than we did today, and that was the difference in the game,” he said. The result gave Syracuse (3-4, 1-4) its first ACC win of the year, and coach Fran Brown said it lifted a weight off the program.

What the Upset Means for North Carolina’s Betting Outlook

For anyone tracking the spread, the result was a clear miss. North Carolina was favored by between 7.5 and 9.5 points depending on the book and the day of the week, with one outlet listing the moneyline at North Carolina -350 and Syracuse +280. A model projection published before kickoff gave the Tar Heels about a 79 percent chance to win. The game was decided by one point, after a missed extra point and a two-point play.

The bigger question is what comes next. North Carolina hosts top-ranked Miami on Saturday, Oct. 31, and the market has priced that game as a major mismatch. The Hurricanes were listed at 16.5 points in opening Week 9 lines and have since been posted at 14.5 at major books, with Miami near -675 on the moneyline and the total at 52.5. A number that large reflects Miami’s rating and the doubt the Syracuse game raised about how UNC finishes close contests.

Bowl eligibility is the longer-term angle. Teams need six wins to qualify this season, which leaves North Carolina needing two more victories from its final five games. After Miami, the Tar Heels visit UConn on Nov. 7, host Louisville on Nov. 14, visit Virginia on Nov. 21 and close at home against NC State on Nov. 28. UConn, Louisville, Virginia and NC State are the games that will decide whether the win-total conversation ends at six or somewhere lower, and each of those spreads will be shaped by how the market reads this team after a collapse like this one.

The Syracuse game also muddied the picture of what the Tar Heels actually are. Wins over Pitt and Duke suggested a team that could grind out close games, while the loss to the Orange, along with earlier defeats to Clemson (28-20) and Notre Dame (37-26), points to inconsistency. Expect bettors to keep treating UNC as a team that can be favored but is hard to trust when laying points.

Syracuse, meanwhile, hosts No. 23 SMU next Saturday. For North Carolina, the immediate question is whether Miami becomes a lost cause on the scoreboard or a chance to show something different against the top team in the country before the real bowl math begins.
