Bulls vs Celtics Prediction: Boston Lays Heavy Points in NBA Cup Rematch

Boston already beat Chicago by 35 points four days ago, and the rematch lands at the same building with the Bulls still hunting for a defensive pulse.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Celtics -15.5
  • Why: Chicago has the worst scoring defense in the league and just lost by 35 on this same floor, with its starting center sidelined.
  • The number to watch: 130.2 points allowed per game, 30th in the NBA

The Chicago Bulls (1-4) visit the Boston Celtics (3-1) at TD Garden on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET in an NBA Cup group-play game. It is the second meeting between the two teams in five days, a scheduling quirk that gave Boston a fresh blueprint and gave Chicago very little time to fix anything.

The Celtics are 3-0 at home and riding a three-game winning streak, the latest a 125-124 overtime survival against Brooklyn on Tuesday in which Jayson Tatum scored 40. The Bulls have lost four of five, including a 133-127 home loss to the Knicks on Wednesday that required Norman Powell to score 30 just to keep it close. This is a team that can score and cannot stop anyone.

A Fifteen-Point Spread Tells the Story

This line has moved the wrong way for anyone hoping to back Chicago. DraftKings opened Boston at -11.5 with a total of 232.5, and the number has since climbed to roughly -15 to -15.5 with the total around 234.5 to 235.5. On the moneyline, the Celtics sit near -770 to -900 while the Bulls return somewhere around +600 to +650. ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Chicago a 13.1 percent chance of winning.

Big spreads like this are dangerous in both directions. Fifteen points is a lot to lay in a league where garbage-time minutes routinely erode covers, but the underlying numbers here support the market. Compare the posted line with live NBA odds before you commit, because books are still adjusting as injury news filters in.

Why Chicago Cannot Get Stops

The Bulls play the fastest pace in the league and give up 130.2 points per game, which ranks 30th. That combination is a recipe for blowouts against any team with shooters, and Boston has plenty. The Celtics shot 21-of-44 from three in the first meeting, with Payton Pritchard going 7-of-10 from deep on his way to 28 points, 19 of them in a third quarter Boston won 39-21.

Chicago’s own offense is not the problem. Powell is averaging 21.6 points, rookie Caleb Wilson is putting up 20.8 points and 7.0 rebounds, Matas Buzelis adds 14.6, and Josh Giddey leads the team with 8.0 assists a night. But the Bulls shot 12-of-44 from three in the first game against Boston and entered that night as the league’s worst three-point shooting team. Nic Claxton is out with a hamstring injury, and Patrick Williams (groin), Jalen Smith (finger) and Tobe Awaka (ankle) are all game-time decisions, which thins the frontcourt even further.

Chicago is 2-8 against Boston across the last 10 meetings, and the most recent one ended 134-99.

On the other side, the Celtics have their own wrinkles. Jaylen Brown was traded to Philadelphia over the summer for Paul George, and so far the fit has worked: George is averaging 22.2 points, Tatum is at 28.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 8.0 assists, and Derrick White keeps the offense organized. Devin Carter is out with an illness, a minor rotation dent. Boston ranks 6th in offensive rating and plays at a slower pace than almost anyone, which tends to shorten games and, ironically, makes it harder to bury a team by 20 or more.

That slower tempo is the one real argument for Chicago covering. If the Bulls get out in transition and Wilson and Powell get hot, they can hang around. But asking a defense that allows 130 a night to hold a 119.8-point Celtics offense in check is the bigger ask. Anyone building a bet from this game should also review the DraftKings promo code offer before placing it.

There is also the matter of how Monday’s game was decided. Boston led by 16 early in the second quarter, by 12 at halftime and by 30 after three, and never trailed. Tatum had 19 of his 23 points before the break, including a buzzer-beating drive to close the first quarter and a long three with 0.8 seconds left in the second. When a team controls a game that thoroughly from the opening minutes, the question on a rematch is rarely who wins. It is whether the favorite sustains the same intensity, and a Celtics group that is 3-0 at TD Garden and building early-season momentum has little reason to coast.

Prediction and Best Bet

Boston wins comfortably and probably early enough to empty the bench. The Celtics are healthy where it matters, playing at home with a first-meeting blueprint, while Chicago is short-handed up front and has not shown it can defend a set half-court offense. The spread is steep, but nothing in the matchup suggests a competitive game.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Celtics 127, Bulls 107
  2. Best Bet: Celtics -15.5

Lay the points with Boston. The Bulls lost by 35 here four days ago and nothing about their roster or defense has improved since.
