Cleveland has the better pitcher on paper, but Tampa Bay keeps finding ways to win games that look like they belong to someone else.
Quick take:
- Pick: Rays +1.5 on the run line
- Why: Gavin Williams is sharp, but both of these teams scratch out runs in tight games, and Tampa Bay’s bullpen and defense have been steadier than Cleveland’s in this series.
- The number to watch: Williams’ 24 strikeouts in 11.2 postseason innings against a Rays lineup that finished as the least strikeout-prone in baseball.
The ALCS is tied 1-1 and moves to Progressive Field for a Thursday afternoon Game 3. First pitch has been moved up to 1:00 PM ET from the original 6:00 PM start because of forecast rain in Cleveland, so expect a different rhythm than the night games both teams have played so far.
Cleveland (85-77) won Game 1 in St. Petersburg, 7-3, then dropped Game 2, 3-1, after a costly fourth inning. Tampa Bay (98-64) won five of the six regular-season meetings between these two, and it needed only one big inning to even the series. That is how the Rays operate.
The Guardians are favored in the -130 to -136 range on the moneyline, with the Rays sitting around +110 to +116 and the total set at 6.5 runs. The run line tells you what oddsmakers really think: Rays +1.5 is priced near -200, so a one-run game is expected to be the most likely outcome. Tampa Bay is still a -135 favorite to win the series itself, which means the market sees Cleveland’s home-field edge as real but small. Griffin Jax gets the ball for Tampa Bay. He is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in two postseason innings, with four strikeouts, and he finished the regular season 8-10 with a 3.53 ERA. Jax has allowed one run or fewer in five straight appearances, and he has never allowed a home run to Cleveland hitters in his career. The knock on him is length: he rarely goes deep into games, which puts the Rays bullpen in play early.
Gavin Williams is the bigger name in this matchup. He is 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP in the postseason, with 24 strikeouts in 11.2 innings, and he has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight appearances. In his one start against Tampa Bay this season, he struck out nine over 7.2 innings and did not allow an earned run.
Williams has 24 strikeouts in 11.2 postseason innings, but Tampa Bay finished the regular season as the least strikeout-prone team in baseball.
That is the tension in this game. Something has to give between a power arm who misses bats and a lineup that simply refuses to swing and miss. Yandy Diaz is the clearest example: he is 7-for-15 with three doubles against Williams in his career, a .467 average, even though he has never homered off him. Tampa Bay does not need a long ball to score on this guy. It needs traffic, and the Rays make traffic.
Cleveland has its own approach. Jose Ramirez is the heart of the lineup, and he is coming off a rough Game 2 in which a misplayed grounder in the fourth inning opened the door for the Rays’ three-run rally. It was an uncharacteristic mistake from a seven-time All-Star, and the Progressive Field crowd should be ready to pick him up. The Guardians have also scored six runs against the Rays bullpen in this series, which is the lever they will try to pull again if Jax exits early.
Early innings should be tight. Tampa Bay allows just 2.02 runs through five innings this season, the third-best mark in the league, and Cleveland is right behind at 2.24. The Guardians have not scored in the first five innings of either game in this series, so any early lead is likely to be small.
This feels like a one-run game, and the pick has to respect that. Cleveland has the home crowd and the better starter on paper, which is why it is favored. But Tampa Bay has shown it can manufacture runs against any pitcher, and the Rays have been the more disciplined club in the series so far. A close Cleveland win is the most likely single outcome, and the Rays’ bullpen has been strong enough to keep them in a one-run game or flip it late. The safer play is on the cushion, not the side.
The pick:
