Patrick Mahomes Scores Rushing TD in Return From ACL Tear as Chiefs Beat Broncos 27-16 on Monday Night Football

Patrick Mahomes made his long-awaited return on Monday Night Football, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-16 win over the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium. The two-time MVP capped his first drive back with a 15-yard touchdown run, announcing in emphatic fashion that his surgically repaired knee is not slowing him down.

Mahomes had been sidelined since tearing his ACL and LCL late in the 2025 season, an injury that threatened to cost him extended time and cast doubt over the Chiefs’ championship window. Instead, he authored one of the fastest returns from a torn ACL in NFL history, needing only about 274 days to get back on the field. Head coach Andy Reid had said all week that Mahomes looked “normal” in practice, and the quarterback backed that up immediately by weaving through Denver’s defense on a scrambling touchdown in the first quarter.

A Statement Return at Arrowhead

The Chiefs and Broncos traded early touchdowns before Kansas City pulled away, with Mahomes directing an offense that looked to be finding its rhythm despite nearly nine months away from live-game action. His touchdown run came on a third-and-long scramble in which he shook off pressure in the pocket before diving into the end zone, a sequence that showed no visible hesitation on the surgically repaired leg. Travis Kelce remained a key target in the passing game as the two continued building on one of the most productive quarterback-tight end connections in league history. Bettors who backed the Chiefs at -2.5 cashed comfortably, and the total stayed under the posted 43 points as Kansas City’s defense did enough to close out the win. Anyone following along on the live NFL odds page saw the line move in Kansas City’s favor throughout the week as reports of Mahomes’ clean bill of health rolled in.

Bigger Picture for Mahomes and the Chiefs

The return comes on the heels of a massive vote of confidence from the organization, which agreed to add two years to Mahomes’ contract, extending the deal through 2033 at a total value of $504.75 million. That commitment underscored how much stock Kansas City still places in its franchise quarterback even after a difficult finish to the previous season. Mahomes enters this year as one of the favorites for NFL Comeback Player of the Year, a race that also includes Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and Monday’s performance only strengthens his case. With a full season of health now the expectation rather than the hope, the Chiefs will look to Mahomes to erase the memory of last year’s stumble and reestablish Kansas City atop the AFC West.
