Lane Kiffin says “both sides won” when he left Ole Miss for LSU last November, but the second-year Tigers coach made clear on Monday that he still expects to feel plenty of “hatred” when he walks into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday for the first time as a visiting head coach. Kiffin Downplays the Breakup, But Not the Reception

Speaking to reporters Monday, Kiffin pushed back on the idea that his exit left a loser behind. “There’s not always a winner and a loser,” he said, pointing to the state of both programs when he arrived at Ole Miss in 2020 compared to now. “When we got there, they had won four games. And when we got here eight months ago, [the Tigers] were 7-6. So, I think it’s a really good thing that I think a lot of people could look at it and say, ‘Hey, both sides are doing really well, and both sides won.'”

Even so, Kiffin isn’t expecting a warm welcome. He told his players Monday that the attention this week will fall almost entirely on him rather than them. “You don’t have anything to worry about as far as, like, attention on you all week,” Kiffin said he told the team. “There’s just going to be so much attention, hatred — everything — on me.” He’s previously compared the fallout from his exit to a divorce, saying the backlash from Ole Miss fans has been on “a totally different level” than what he dealt with after leaving Tennessee in 2017.

Both programs enter Saturday at 2-0. LSU is coming off a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech and sits No. 7 in the AP poll, while Ole Miss is unbeaten behind back-to-back 40-point offensive performances, most recently a 41-9 win over Charlotte, and checks in at No. 8. It’s the first time since Kiffin’s exit that the two programs meet, and it doubles as each team’s SEC opener.

Betting Market Already Reacting to the Rivalry Angle

The sportsbook market has treated this as one of the marquee lines of Week 4. LSU opened as a slight road favorite and has held that number, with the spread sitting in the -2.5 to -3 range for the Tigers and the total hovering around 58.5 points — a sign oddsmakers expect both high-powered offenses to move the ball.
