Nuggets vs. Thunder Summer League Prediction: Denver Looks to Build on Fourth-Quarter Surge

Denver Nuggets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder tips off Day 6 of NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Odds, key players, and a best bet for the July 14 matchup at Cox Pavilion.

Summer League basketball rolls on in Las Vegas, and Day 6 brings a matchup between two franchises still finding their footing without their franchise cornerstones on the floor. The Denver Nuggets (1-1) face the Oklahoma City Thunder (0-2) at Cox Pavilion on Tuesday, July 14, with tip-off set for 9:00 PM ET. As always with Summer League, these are not the rosters fans will see in October — Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are nowhere near this gym. Instead, it’s second-round picks, two-way hopefuls, and G League grinders auditioning for real NBA minutes.

Denver enters off a strong response to an opening-night loss. The Nuggets dropped their Summer League debut 97-86 to Houston on July 10 before bouncing back with a 101-82 win over Minnesota on July 11, riding a decisive 28-10 fourth quarter to seal it. Oklahoma City, meanwhile, is still searching for its first win of the week after losing to the Lakers on July 10 and the Warriors two nights later. Both teams have shown flashes, but Denver’s group has looked noticeably more organized through two games.

Where the Vegas Odds Sit for Nuggets-Thunder

The number here is essentially a coin flip, which tracks with two 1-2ish teams meeting mid-week. Denver opened as a 1.5-point underdog before the market shaded back toward even, with the moneyline sitting near pick’em on both sides. Prediction markets have echoed that same split, with Denver drawing slightly more confidence than Oklahoma City heading into tip. The total sits in the high 170s, suggesting oddsmakers expect a fairly up-tempo, mistake-filled Summer League script — which is usually the case when neither roster has much shot continuity built in yet.

Given how thin these rosters are on shooting depth, expect the line to be sensitive to foul trouble and hot streaks from bench scorers more than anything resembling a normal NBA betting market. Bettors tracking live NBA odds throughout the week have seen this number move more than once already.

The Players Driving This Matchup

Denver’s story through two games has been the backcourt duo of KJ Simpson and Bryce Hopkins. Simpson, brought in after helping lead Charlotte to last year’s Summer League title, opened with 17 points, nine assists, one steal and one block in the loss to Houston, then followed that up with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win over Minnesota — he’s averaging right around 18 points and 6.5 assists across the two contests. Hopkins, Denver’s second-round pick out of St. John’s, has been the Nuggets’ most consistent scorer, posting 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting against Houston and 16 points with seven rebounds against Minnesota. He’s averaging 20 points a game and has racked up five combined steals and blocks, showing real defensive activity to go with his scoring instincts. Erik Stevenson chipped in 18 points, three rebounds and two steals in the win over Minnesota, giving Denver a third reliable scoring option off the perimeter. Trevon Brazile, the other Nuggets draft pick in this year’s class, has had a quieter start, managing just five points in his first outing, but he’s shown flashes defensively that Denver will want to see more of as the week progresses. Oklahoma City’s group has been thinner on standout performances so far. Payton Sandfort, who spent part of last season on a two-way deal with the Thunder, has been the most productive returning face, averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds across his first two Summer League games while shooting 50% from the field and 33.3% from three. First-round pick Bennett Stirtz and two-way wing Brooks Barnhizer are among the players the Thunder need more from if they want to snap this 0-2 start, and two-way guard Otega Oweh has missed both games so far with an injury, which has cost Oklahoma City a rotation piece who was expected to contribute right away. Without Oweh available and without much separation at the top of the box score through two games, Oklahoma City’s offense has lacked the kind of go-to scorer Denver has found in Hopkins.

What to Watch on the Floor

The clearest edge for Denver is shot creation. Hopkins has been getting to his spots and to the free-throw line consistently, and Simpson’s ability to set up teammates gives the Nuggets a more functional half-court offense than what Oklahoma City has shown through its first two games. Denver did shoot poorly from three against Houston (4-of-22), so if that continues against a Thunder defense that has had extra days to prepare, it could keep this one tighter than the Nuggets would like. For Oklahoma City, containing Simpson’s dribble penetration and forcing Denver’s role players to beat them from outside will be the game plan — the Thunder need Sandfort to keep producing at his current clip and need someone else, whether it’s Stirtz or Barnhizer, to step up as a second scoring option. Anyone new to Las Vegas sportsbooks this week should also check the rules around Nevada sports betting before wagering courtside.

Prediction and Best Bet

Denver’s two established scorers in Simpson and Hopkins give the Nuggets a higher floor than an Oklahoma City team still searching for consistent secondary scoring punch. The Nuggets have also shown they can win playing from behind, which matters in a setting where turnovers and runs define most quarters. Oklahoma City’s lack of an available Oweh only widens that gap further.

  • Prediction: Denver Nuggets 96, Oklahoma City Thunder 89
  • Best Bet: Denver Nuggets +1.5

Take the points with Denver here. Even in a game that could easily go either way given Summer League’s chaotic nature, the Nuggets have the two most productive individual performers on the floor in Simpson and Hopkins, and that kind of proven scoring shows up when possessions get scarce in the fourth quarter.
