World Cup 2026 Quarterfinals Preview: France, Spain, England, Argentina Headline Final Eight

The World Cup field is down to eight, and the shape of the bracket says a lot about how this tournament has gone. All three host nations, the United States, Canada, and Mexico, are out, eliminated in the Round of 16. Six of the eight remaining teams are European. Morocco stands alone for Africa. Argentina stands alone for South America. And somehow, after five rounds of matches, the four biggest stars in the sport are all still playing. Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane have combined for 28 goals so far, and every one of them takes the pitch again this week with a semifinal berth on the line.

The quarterfinals stretch across four days and four NFL stadiums, starting Thursday in Boston and wrapping up Saturday night in Kansas City. From there, the semifinals land July 14 and 15, with the final set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Here is how each of these eight teams got here, and what to watch when they take the field.

QF1: France vs. Morocco

Thursday, July 9, 4:00 PM ET, Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA

France has not lost, and more strikingly, it has not conceded. The French rolled through the Round of 32 with a 3-0 win over Sweden, then ground out a 1-0 win over Paraguay in the Round of 16 on a Mbappe penalty, with Paraguay leaning heavily on physical, disruptive tactics to try to get under his skin. It did not work. France sits at 5-0-0 with five clean sheets to open the tournament, and Mbappe has been at the center of it, sitting on seven goals for the event. The midfield trio of Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, and Mbappe has carried the attack, and this matchup carries some extra weight: it is a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semifinal, which France won 2-0.

Morocco’s path has been far bumpier. The Atlas Lions needed penalties to survive a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in the Round of 32, winning the shootout 4-3, then dug out of an early hole against Canada in the Round of 16, scoring three unanswered goals in the second half to win 3-0. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice in that win, while playmaker Brahim Diaz and right back Achraf Hakimi combined for three assists. The concern heading into Foxborough is Ismael Saibari, who left the Canada match early with a hamstring injury. Saibari has been Morocco’s most dangerous attacker, becoming only the second African player ever to score three goals in a single World Cup, joining Senegal’s Papa Bouba Diop from 2002, and he also buried the decisive penalty in the shootout win over the Netherlands. His availability against France is uncertain. Hakimi also picked up a yellow card in the Canada match, adding a bit of a discipline question mark to Morocco’s backline.

QF2: Spain vs. Belgium

Friday, July 10, 3:00 PM ET, SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA

Spain arrives as the reigning European champions and hasn’t tasted defeat in 35 games, a streak that dates back to their penalty-shootout exit to Morocco in the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup. The current run has been built the same way France’s has: shutouts. Spain blanked Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32, then edged Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 on a stoppage-time goal from substitute Mikel Merino, assisted by Ferran Torres. Five matches, five clean sheets. The one lingering question is Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old sensation who is still working his way back to full match fitness after a hamstring issue.

Belgium’s road has been anything but clean, and that is exactly what makes this group interesting. The Red Devils trailed Senegal 2-0 in the Round of 32 before roaring back to win 3-2 in extra time, then followed that with a statement, a 4-1 demolition of the United States in the Round of 16. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice in that win, Romelu Lukaku added a goal off the bench, and Hans Vanaken chipped in a goal assisted by De Ketelaere. This is a veteran-heavy roster: 34-year-old Thibaut Courtois in goal, 33-year-old Lukaku still productive in a reserve role, 35-year-old Kevin De Bruyne, who was rested and did not feature against the Americans, and 31-year-old winger Leandro Trossard. Belgium will be without midfielder Amadou Onana, who is out with a torn ACL.

QF3: Norway vs. England

Saturday, July 11, 5:00 PM ET, Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, FL

Norway’s run might be the best story of the tournament. This is the country’s first World Cup appearance since 1998, and its first quarterfinal appearance ever. Norway beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in the Round of 32, then delivered the shock of the knockout stage, knocking out five-time champion Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, with Erling Haaland scoring twice late to seal it. Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland has been outstanding, coming up with key saves in that Brazil win, but this is Haaland’s tournament to define, and he has done exactly that.

England is chasing its third consecutive World Cup quarterfinal appearance, and got here the hard way. After beating DR Congo 2-1 in the Round of 32, England needed a wild finish to escape Mexico 3-2 at Estadio Azteca in the Round of 16. Jude Bellingham scored twice in a span of just 98 seconds, and Harry Kane added a goal himself after drawing defenders away to help spring Bellingham loose. Bukayo Saka set up Kane’s goal, delivering the cross that won the penalty. Saka is still managing an Achilles injury and his minutes have been carefully managed as a result, but he has been productive every time he has stepped on the field.

QF4: Argentina vs. Switzerland

Saturday, July 11, 9:00 PM ET, Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO

Argentina has needed every bit of Lionel Messi to get this far. The defending champions beat Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time in the Round of 32, then trailed Egypt 2-0 in the Round of 16 before Messi scored twice to spark a comeback win, 3-2. Messi leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals and is the only player in the tournament to have scored in all five of his team’s matches. The flip side of all that drama is fatigue. Argentina has needed extra time or a second-half rally in multiple matches now, and how much gas is left in the tank is a real question after a grueling run through the knockout rounds.

Switzerland’s presence in the final eight is its own kind of milestone. This is the Swiss squad’s first World Cup quarterfinal since 1954, the year they hosted the tournament. Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32, then needed a shootout to get past Colombia in the Round of 16 after 120 scoreless minutes, winning 4-3 on penalties. The team will be shorthanded in Kansas City. Johan Manzambi, one of the breakout stars of this World Cup, suffered a knee injury in training ahead of the Colombia match, and his absence was felt in that game.

Setting the Stage for the Final Eight

Whatever happens across these four matchups, the winners will meet in the semifinals on July 14 and 15 before the tournament crowns a champion on July 19 at MetLife Stadium. It is a bracket loaded with contrasting stories, a France side that has yet to concede a goal, a Norway team playing in uncharted territory, an Argentina squad leaning on Messi to carry it further, and a Belgium roster stacked with veterans trying to squeeze out one more run. Fans looking to follow the action closely can check live sports odds as lines shift throughout the week, and bettors setting up new accounts around the knockout rounds can compare offers like the DraftKings promo code, the FanDuel promo code, or the BetMGM promo code, along with a full rundown of options at sportsbook reviews. Four matches, four stadiums, and a real shot at history for at least one team that has never been here before. The road to MetLife Stadium runs through this weekend.
