Kyle Schwarber just launched two homers into an Iowa cornfield, and now the Phillies bring that swagger to Target Field looking to bury the Twins in a series sweep.
Quick take:
- Pick: Phillies -146 on the moneyline
- Why: Philadelphia’s lineup is clicking at the perfect time and Minnesota’s rotation is in shambles
- The number to watch: Twins starter Connor Prielipp carries a 4.79 ERA into a spot start against a Phillies order that’s raked all series
The Phillies (65-58) rolled into this series fresh off a 7-1 demolition of the Twins at the Field of Dreams game, and they’ve now won consecutive meetings against Minnesota (60-63) with a chance to complete the sweep on Saturday night. Philadelphia sits a half-game up on Arizona for the third NL Wild Card spot, which makes every one of these late-summer road wins matter. Minnesota, meanwhile, is fighting just to stay relevant in a jumbled AL Central race, sitting 3.5 games back of first-place Chicago with a pitching staff that’s been ravaged by injury all year.
You can track how this line moves at live MLB odds throughout the day, but the market currently has Philadelphia as a healthy road favorite, with the line sitting around -146 to -155 on the moneyline and the Phillies also giving up a run and a half on the spread. That’s a significant number for a game played in Minnesota, and it reflects just how thin the Twins’ pitching options have become — Minnesota is turning to rookie right-hander Connor Prielipp, who’s carrying a 4.79 ERA and a 3-5 record, while Philadelphia counters with Jesus Luzardo, who’s been one of the more reliable arms in the league at 10-5 with a 3.32 ERA. The total is set at 8, suggesting oddsmakers expect both bullpens to be stressed by the middle innings.
| Saturday, September 5 at 7:11 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Minnesota Twins | +1.5 (-205) | +116 | O 7.5 (-108) |
| Chicago White Sox | -1.5 (140) | -140 | U 7.5 (-129) |
The gap between these two clubs’ last two weeks is stark, and the head-to-head log from this series so far backs it up.

Kyle Schwarber’s two-homer night in Dyersville pushed his major league-leading total to 37, and he’s operating with an .915 OPS on the season. Bryce Harper isn’t far behind at .868, and Trea Turner has reached base four times in a game as recently as the series opener. That top of the order has produced runs in bunches all series, and Minnesota’s pitching depth — already without Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan, David Festa and Mick Abel, all out with arm or shoulder issues — doesn’t have much left to throw at it. The Twins are essentially piecing together a rotation with spare parts at this point in August.
Minnesota isn’t without answers. Byron Buxton has 25 home runs and an .863 OPS, and catcher Ryan Jeffers has quietly been one of the better hitters in that lineup, batting .286 with an .886 OPS and 10 homers in just 206 at-bats. Jeffers has come up with clutch hits against Philadelphia already this series, but he can’t carry a rotation missing this many starters by himself.
Schwarber’s 37 home runs already lead all of baseball, and he did it against this exact opponent two nights ago.
That kind of production against a starving pitching staff is exactly the mismatch bettors should be leaning into. Philadelphia’s lineup has scored at least six runs in three of its last five games, a trend Minnesota’s battered staff has done little to slow down.
Philadelphia has also been the more disciplined ballclub late in games this series, working counts against Minnesota’s bullpen and making Twins manager Rocco Baldelli dig deeper into a taxed relief corps by the sixth inning. That’s a recipe for more runs, not fewer, as this series wraps up.
Philadelphia has the better lineup, the better starter, and clear momentum after embarrassing Minnesota at Field of Dreams. The Twins’ rotation crisis makes this a tough spot for a lineup that still has some thump in Buxton and Jeffers but not enough length on the mound to keep pace.
The pick:
