Diamondbacks vs. Braves Prediction: Eduardo Rodriguez Looks to Repeat Shutout Act

Eduardo Rodriguez just shut the Braves out on their own turf, and 24 hours later he gets a Atlanta lineup that’s still trying to figure out how it lost to a team sitting eight and a half games back in the NL West.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Diamondbacks +1.5
  • Why: Eduardo Rodriguez is running a 2.70 ERA and just beat this same Braves lineup on Friday
  • The number to watch: Atlanta is 0 for its last 2 vs. Rodriguez this series with zero runs allowed

Arizona took the series opener 2-0 on Friday, a result that stung a little more than it should have for a Braves club that’s still comfortably running the NL East at 73-49. The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, have quietly climbed back to 65-58 and a 5-5 mark over their last ten, good enough to stay in the wild card picture even with the Dodgers and Padres both playing well ahead of them. This one has a rematch flavor to it — Rodriguez already solved Atlanta once this week, and Arizona would love nothing more than a series win in Truist Park.

Vegas Still Trusts Atlanta Despite Friday’s Dud

The market hasn’t panicked after one shutout loss. Atlanta opened as a modest favorite and books have the Braves around -130 to -175 on the moneyline depending on the shop, with the run line sitting at Atlanta -1.5 and Arizona +1.5. The total has settled in around 9.5, reflecting two lineups that can score in bunches even with Rodriguez and Holmes both taking the mound. Given how well E-Rod has pitched all year, there’s a real case that the number on Arizona covering that run line is undervaluing what he’s shown against this exact opponent 48 hours ago.

Recent Form

Arizona’s won three of its last four series openers and has a winner in its pocket already this weekend, while Atlanta’s offense has gone cold at the worst possible time against a pitcher who’s been nearly untouchable this season.

Rodriguez Has Atlanta’s Number Right Now

Eduardo Rodriguez is 11-4 with a 2.70 ERA, comfortably his best full season in years, and he just delivered a shutout against this same Braves lineup on Friday. His strikeout rate sits north of 17% with a walk rate under 8%, and he’s inducing ground balls at a 40%-plus clip — exactly the profile that neutralizes a power-heavy Atlanta order missing several bullpen arms behind him. Grant Holmes has been solid in his own right at 7-4 with a 3.47 ERA, and his teams are 15-6 against the spread in his starts this year, but he’s working with a shorthanded relief corps. Reynaldo Lopez, Robert Suarez, Joe Jimenez and Spencer Schwellenbach are all out, which means any lead the Braves build has to survive a bullpen that’s thinner than it was a month ago.

Offensively, Arizona leans on Corbin Carroll (.243, 18 homers, 57 RBI, .820 OPS) and Ketel Marte (.252, 21 homers, 67 RBI), both of whom have shown they can do damage against playoff-caliber pitching all year. Marte is considered day-to-day, which is worth watching before first pitch, but Arizona’s lineup has enough thump elsewhere — Gabriel Moreno is hitting .302 with a strong on-base rate — to still trouble Holmes even without him at full strength.

Rodriguez has surrendered zero runs to Atlanta across his most recent start against them, backing a 2.70 season ERA that ranks among the better marks in the National League.

That kind of form doesn’t evaporate in 24 hours. Atlanta’s lineup ranks among the league’s better offensive units by wRC+, but they were held off the board completely on Friday, and facing the same pitcher who just did it to them creates a real psychological hurdle. The Braves’ saving grace is their bullpen when healthy, but “when healthy” is doing a lot of work with Suarez, Lopez and Jimenez all sidelined.

Arizona’s road split (29-31) isn’t flashy, but they’ve won back-to-back road series against quality opponents in the last month, and Truist Park hasn’t been the fortress it once was this summer. Manager Torey Lovullo has leaned hard on his rotation down the stretch, and Rodriguez pitching on regular rest against a lineup he just dominated is exactly the kind of matchup a smart bettor circles ahead of time.

The Braves still have Chris Sale and his 2.16 ERA lined up later in this series, a reminder of just how deep this rotation can be even with the bullpen banged up. But that depth doesn’t help Holmes tonight, and Atlanta’s lineup will need to snap out of Friday’s funk against a pitcher who has given them nothing to work with recently.

Prediction and Best Bet

Given the pitching matchup edge and Arizona’s fresh momentum off Friday’s win, this shapes up as a tighter game than the moneyline suggests. Atlanta’s talent level should carry them to a win at home, but not comfortably.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Atlanta Braves 4, Arizona Diamondbacks 3
  2. Best Bet: Diamondbacks +1.5
