Justin Wrobleski Lands on Injured List, Adding to Dodgers Rotation Concerns Amid Shrinking NL West Lead

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed left-hander Justin Wrobleski on the 15-day injured list Sunday with left forearm inflammation, pulling a surprise All-Star out of the rotation just as the club tries to hold off a shrinking pack in the National League West. Right-hander Kyle Hurt was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill the roster spot, beefing up the bullpen rather than replacing Wrobleski turn-for-turn in the rotation.

The move comes one night after Wrobleski took the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers and worked six innings, allowing four runs on four hits with six strikeouts across 107 pitches in a loss. There was no visible injury moment during that outing, and the Dodgers have not detailed a specific IL timeline beyond the mandatory 15 days, meaning further imaging or a fresh bullpen session will likely determine whether Wrobleski is ticketed for a quick return or something more prolonged.

A Breakout Season Interrupted

Wrobleski, 26, has been one of the more unexpected stories in the Dodgers’ 2026 rotation. In his first full season as a starter for Los Angeles and third in the majors overall, he built a 11-5 record with a 3.56 ERA, 100 strikeouts and a 1.10 WHIP over 126.1 innings, good enough to earn his first career All-Star selection off a 2.69 first-half ERA. He also ranks third in the National League in walks per nine innings at 1.99, a testament to the command that has made him a reliable innings-eater in a rotation that has been anything but healthy. His numbers have crept up over the second half, but Sunday marks the first time all season he has landed on the injured list.

That durability made Wrobleski a stabilizing presence behind a rotation that has otherwise been beset by absences. Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki are the only Dodgers starters who have avoided the injured list entirely in 2026, underscoring how thin the margin for error has become even for a 74-50 club sitting atop the division. Hurt, 28, arrives with a 3-1 record, 4.46 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 38.1 innings this season and slots into the bullpen as an eighth reliever rather than a like-for-like rotation replacement, which could push the Dodgers toward a spot start, a piggyback approach, or an internal shuffle over Wrobleski’s next scheduled turns.

The corresponding roster move also says something about how the Dodgers are choosing to absorb the loss in the short term. Rather than summoning a starter from the upper levels of the farm system, the club opted for bullpen reinforcement, a sign it may prefer to lean on existing rotation pieces and off-days to cover Wrobleski’s next couple of turns rather than hand a spot start to an unproven arm. That approach buys time for evaluation but also puts more strain on an already stretched group of relievers in the middle of a stretch where every game carries playoff-seeding weight.

What It Means for the Betting Markets

The timing stings. Los Angeles has dropped eight of its last eleven games and seen its NL West cushion shrink from 8.5 games earlier this month to 8.0 over Arizona and San Diego, who are tied for second, entering Sunday’s series finale against Milwaukee. That stretch has already been reflected in the futures market: FanGraphs’ World Series probability for the Dodgers slid from 31.4% on August 1 to 23.1% by August 11, even after the club added Tarik Skubal at the deadline, and the team’s World Series price sat around +160 as of mid-August after opening shorter in the immediate aftermath of the Skubal trade.

Losing a starter who was quietly outperforming his profile only adds to the questions sportsbooks and bettors were already asking about rotation depth heading into October. With Yamamoto and Sasaki carrying the heaviest workload of any healthy tandem on the staff, any further attrition would thin an already stretched group and could pressure both the Dodgers’ divisional and pennant prices further if Wrobleski’s absence extends beyond the minimum. Conversely, a quick return timeline — something bettors will be watching closely in the days ahead — could stabilize those numbers just as fast, given how much of the market’s recent skepticism has been tied to health rather than talent. For now, the injury reinforces a theme that has followed the Dodgers for weeks: the roster’s ceiling remains among the highest in baseball, but its floor is only as strong as its healthiest arms.
