The Brewers have already won two of three in Los Angeles this weekend, and now they get Tarik Skubal standing between them and a series win in Chavez Ravine.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Brewers +1.5
  • Why: Milwaukee has taken two of three from the defending NL West leaders this series and gets a soft matchup against Skubal’s control if their lineup can work counts.
  • The number to watch: Dodgers bullpen has thrown six relievers onto the injured list this season, thinning a unit that has to cover for a shaky Los Angeles pitching staff behind Skubal.

Milwaukee arrives at 76-48 and running away with the NL Central, while the Dodgers sit 74-50 atop a considerably tighter NL West race. Both clubs are in this game with October on the mind, but it’s the road team that’s controlled the storyline in this series, taking Thursday’s opener and Saturday’s rematch while dropping only the Friday game in between.

Sunday’s finale is a step up in difficulty for Milwaukee. Logan Henderson gets the ball for the Brewers and has been outstanding in his rookie campaign, sitting at 6-2 with a 2.88 ERA, but he’s matched up against Tarik Skubal, who has quietly built a 2.93 ERA of his own since arriving in Los Angeles’s rotation. Bettors tracking MLB odds all weekend have watched the line hold steady even as Milwaukee kept winning.

What the Market Is Saying About This Finale

Books have installed the Dodgers as clear favorites at home, with moneyline prices around -178 to -181 and the run line sitting at Dodgers -1.5. The total has settled at 7.5 runs. That line makes sense on paper — Skubal is the better name value and the Dodgers are at home — but it also means Milwaukee is getting nearly plus-150 on the moneyline and a run and a half of cushion against a team it’s already beaten twice this series.

Neither team has been dominant lately, but Milwaukee’s letdown came against San Diego, not the Dodgers — the numbers below tell two different stories about how each club is trending into the rubber match.

Contreras and a Battered Dodgers Bullpen

William Contreras has quietly been the engine of Milwaukee’s offense all year, hitting .270 with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs, and he’s exactly the type of hitter who can make Skubal work — patient, willing to take a walk, and capable of tacking on production once he’s on base. The bigger issue for Los Angeles isn’t the man on the mound Sunday, it’s who’s waiting behind him. The Dodgers have lost Blake Treinen, Jake Cousins, Brock Stewart, and Will Klein to injury this season, and Will Smith remains out with neck inflammation, gutting the middle of both the bullpen and the lineup.

Milwaukee isn’t fully healthy either — Brice Turang has been in and out of the lineup with knee soreness, and Cooper Pratt remains sidelined at shortstop — but the Brewers’ issues are further from the top of the roster than Los Angeles’s are.

The Dodgers have used a rehabbing Tyler Glasnow, a rehabbing Gavin Stone, and a battered bullpen just to get through the second half of August.

That’s the swing factor in a game where Skubal is favored to outduel Henderson. If Milwaukee’s lineup — Jackson Chourio, Andruw Vaughn, Jake Bauers, Contreras — can push this into the sixth or seventh inning with the score close, the Dodgers no longer have Treinen or Stewart to bridge to their closer. That’s the version of this game where a road underdog getting a run and a half starts to look appealing.

It’s a short turnaround, too. The Brewers still have to fly out for a series against Colorado starting Monday, but that’s a problem for tomorrow. Manager Pat Murphy has leaned on this rotation all summer to protect a bullpen that’s been without Joel Kuhnel and JoJo Romero for extended stretches, and Henderson going deep into this game matters just as much for Milwaukee’s week ahead as it does for Sunday’s result.

Los Angeles, for its part, is dealing with more than just bullpen arms. Dalton Rushing’s UCL tear behind the plate pushed Ben Rortvedt into semi-regular duty, and while Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani continue to anchor the middle of the order, the drop-off after Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy is more pronounced than it’s been in past Dodgers lineups. Mookie Betts is still working his way back to peak form after an earlier oblique injury cost him more than a month, and his .239 average this season is a reminder that even star-studded rosters carry scar tissue by mid-August.

Prediction and Best Bet

Skubal gives the Dodgers a real edge on the mound, and Los Angeles should be considered the more talented team on paper. But Milwaukee has already shown it can hang around and even win this series, and the Dodgers’ thin bullpen is a real liability if this game stays within a run or two into the seventh inning.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Dodgers 5, Brewers 4
  2. Best Bet: Brewers +1.5

Take the extra run and a half. Milwaukee’s lineup has proven this weekend it can compete with the NL’s best, and that bullpen depth chart favors the Brewers if the game gets tight late.
