Jonathan Taylor’s New Colts Deal: Two Years, $44 Million, and a Betting Market That Barely Blinked

Jonathan Taylor is staying in Indianapolis for the long haul. The Colts and their star running back have agreed to terms on a two-year, $44 million extension, according to Taylor’s agent, who informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport of the deal Thursday morning. The contract can max out at $47 million and includes $39 million in guarantees, making it the third-largest deal for a running back in NFL history.

The timing is no coincidence. Taylor’s new payday lands just two days after Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson reset the running back market with a three-year extension worth up to $75 million. Agent Malki Kawa of First Round Management got Taylor’s deal done quickly in the aftermath, locking in the 27-year-old before he ever had to test the open market. Taylor was entering the final season of the three-year, $42 million extension he signed with Indianapolis back in October 2023, and rather than let that uncertainty hang over camp, the Colts moved to keep their offensive centerpiece in the fold.

Why Indianapolis Paid Up Again

Taylor gave the Colts every reason to open the checkbook. He rushed for 1,585 yards last season, finishing third in the league and just 36 yards off the rushing title, while leading the NFL outright with 18 rushing touchdowns. That production came in his sixth season with the franchise that drafted him in the second round back in 2020, and it reinforced that Taylor remains one of the most efficient, punishing runners in football even as the league’s running back market has cooled and heated back up in cycles.

The new money changes his outlook dramatically for 2026 and beyond. Under the previous deal, Taylor was playing out a season with a base salary of roughly $11.98 million. The restructured, extended terms now push him into rarefied financial territory at the position — trailing only Robinson’s $75 million ceiling and Christian McCaffrey among running backs by total guarantees, per multiple reports on the framework of the deal. It’s a clear signal from Colts ownership that Taylor, not just the offensive line or the quarterback situation, is viewed as the engine of this offense heading into a pivotal season.

What It Means for Colts Futures and Taylor Props

From a betting standpoint, this is the kind of roster news that reinforces existing market positioning rather than upending it. Books had Indianapolis’s season win total sitting at 7.5, with the over recently priced near -140, and the Colts were priced around +380 to win the AFC South before Thursday’s announcement. Locking up Taylor removes any lingering variable about his workload or motivation entering the year — a running back playing out a contract year carries injury-avoidance risk in the eyes of some bettors, and that question is now off the board entirely.

The prop market is where this news is most relevant. Taylor already carried longshot value at around +650 to lead the NFL in rushing yards at some books, and his season-long rushing yardage total had been set in the 1,249.5 range with the over drawing steady action given his workload trend. With his long-term future now secured, expect no hedge in touches or scheme usage — if anything, the extension all but guarantees Indianapolis leans on him as the workhorse it has paid him to be. Bettors tracking Offensive Player of the Year futures or AFC South division markets should treat this as confirmation of the Colts’ offensive identity rather than a market-mover on its own, since the news reflects continuity rather than a change in personnel or scheme. The bigger ripple is across the league: with Robinson and now Taylor both resetting top-of-market running back money within 48 hours, sportsbooks and roster-construction bettors alike are watching to see which team is next to face a similar decision at the position.
