UCLA Stuns No. 13 Oregon 17-15 at Autzen, Sends Ducks Out of AP Top 25 as CFP Odds Flip in Bruins’ Favor

No. 21 UCLA upset No. 13 Oregon 17-15 at Autzen Stadium on Saturday, forcing seven turnovers to hand the Ducks their first home loss to the Bruins since 2004. The win pushed UCLA to 5-0 (3-0 Big Ten) under first-year head coach Bob Chesney, while Oregon fell to 3-2 (1-1 Big Ten) and tumbled completely out of the AP Top 25 the following day.

The result ended UCLA’s five-game losing streak in the series and marked the Bruins’ first win in Eugene in more than two decades. It also made Chesney, who took over a program that finished the previous season with nine losses, the first UCLA coach in 77 years to open his tenure 5-0. The win carried extra weight for Chesney personally: his previous team, James Madison, was eliminated from last season’s College Football Playoff by Oregon at the same stadium.

A Turnover-Plagued Night Costs Oregon Its Signature Game

Oregon entered the weekend ranked No. 13 and still carrying national title aspirations after opening the year at No. 2 in the preseason poll. Those hopes took a direct hit as the Ducks’ offense stalled behind quarterback Dylan Raiola, who finished 6-of-19 passing for just 43 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble. Trailing 17-6 with 13:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, Oregon coach Dan Lanning pulled Raiola in favor of third-string quarterback Brock Thomas, a Eugene native and former walk-on from Sheldon High School.

Thomas nearly pulled off the comeback, completing 11 of 16 passes for 156 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown strike to Evan Stewart that cut the deficit to two points with just over two minutes left. Oregon’s two-point conversion attempt failed, and UCLA’s defense held on to seal the win. Lanning was candid afterward about the timing of the switch. “You can always go back and say, ‘We should have done that earlier,'” he said, adding that the coaching staff needs to evaluate every aspect of the offense, including play-calling, heading into the back half of the season.

The loss dropped Oregon out of the AP Top 25 entirely for the first time under Lanning since his debut season in 2022, a steep fall from the preseason No. 2 ranking. The Ducks did hang on to the No. 25 spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but the national perception shift was unmistakable. UCLA, meanwhile, jumped nine spots to No. 12 in the AP poll, its highest ranking since 2022, after forcing seven turnovers in one of the most complete defensive performances of the season nationally.

A Major Swing in College Football Playoff Market Value

The betting and projection markets had flagged this exact game as a pivot point before kickoff. CBS Sports’ College Football Playoff Forecaster had projected Oregon with a 51.1 percent chance of reaching the 12-team field with a win over UCLA, a number that was set to collapse to 19.6 percent with a loss. UCLA, by contrast, was projected at a 33.3 percent playoff probability with a win, compared to just 8.3 percent had the Bruins lost. The outcome triggered exactly that swing, and the fallout has been significant for how oddsmakers and projection models now view both programs’ postseason chances.

With the loss, Oregon sits at two losses in early October with a brutal reality: the Ducks’ remaining ranked opponent is a road trip to Ohio State on November 7, and a three-loss finish would almost certainly eliminate them from playoff contention regardless of how the rest of the Big Ten shakes out. Oregon’s preseason billing as a national title contender has evaporated in market terms, with its playoff probability now a fraction of where it started the year.

UCLA’s trajectory has moved in the opposite direction just as sharply. The Bruins are now being treated as legitimate playoff participants in national bracket projections rather than a trendy story out of the Big Ten basement. One CBS Sports bowl projection slots UCLA as the No. 9 seed in a first-round matchup against No. 8 Texas, a scenario that would have seemed far-fetched before Chesney’s group walked into Autzen Stadium and left with a signature road win. With wins over Oregon now on the resume and an unbeaten record through five games, UCLA’s path to the postseason has gone from theoretical to one of the more compelling stories in the sport, and the oddsmakers are adjusting accordingly as the Big Ten race tightens heading into the second half of the season.
