Dodgers vs. Mets Prediction: LA Looks to Complete the Sweep at Citi Field

The Dodgers have already buried the Mets twice this season, and Sunday at Citi Field looks like more of the same on paper — but a laboring bullpen has turned every LA laugher into a stress test lately.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Dodgers -1.5
  • Why: LA’s lineup overwhelms a shaky Mets rotation piece in Freddy Peralta, and New York’s bullpen depth behind him is running thin.
  • The number to watch: Mets are 2-8 in their last 10 games.

Los Angeles rolls into Queens at 66-38 and sitting comfortably atop the NL West, while the Mets have completely fallen off, dropping to 43-61 and 15-plus games back in the NL East. This is the fourth meeting of the season between these two, and the Dodgers have taken the first two of this series already, extending a run of dominance that includes an April sweep at Dodger Stadium.

It’s a stark turnaround from where these two franchises stood a year ago, when the Mets actually held their own against LA. This season has been a different story entirely — a Dodgers team that added Kyle Tucker over the winter and still boasts Ohtani, Betts and Freeman at the top of the order has simply outclassed a Mets club that hasn’t gotten enough from its expensive core. New York is bracing for a quiet finish to the year, while LA is jockeying for playoff seeding and home-field advantage.

Why the Market Still Isn’t Fully Sold on LA

Books have the Dodgers as clear road favorites, but the number is softer than the records suggest. Moneyline prices have Los Angeles around -154 to -172 depending on the book, with the run line set at Dodgers -1.5 (+104) and the Mets +1.5 (-125). Checking live MLB odds shows that total sitting at 9.5, reflecting two shaky-ish starters more than two dominant offenses — Freddy Peralta and Emmet Sheehan have each posted ERAs north of 5.00 this season, and neither has been especially efficient deep into games.

The gap between these two clubs shows up clearly in how each has trended over the last couple weeks, and the head-to-head ledger only reinforces it.

A Lineup Built to Punish Mediocre Pitching

Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and new addition Kyle Tucker give Los Angeles as deep a top-to-bottom order as exists in baseball, and Sunday’s presumptive lineup adds Andy Pages hitting second — he’s quietly been one of the more productive complementary bats in that group, slashing near .270 with pop to all fields. Peralta has struggled with the long ball all year, and a lineup this loaded with left-handed thump (Ohtani, Freeman, Tucker, Dalton Rushing) is precisely the matchup a homer-prone righty wants to avoid.

On the other side, New York’s lineup still has name recognition — Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien — but the production hasn’t matched the paychecks for most of the season. Lindor and Semien have each battled extended cold stretches, and the Mets have scored more than four runs just twice in their last ten games.

Soto remains a legitimate threat at the plate no matter the circumstances, and Francisco Alvarez has shown signs of life behind him. But this is still a lineup missing thump in the middle innings, and manager decisions to shuffle the order — including moving rookie pieces like Carson Benge and Jared Young into regular roles — speak to how much New York is searching for answers down the stretch.

The Mets are 2-8 over their last ten games, one of the worst stretches of any team in the National League right now.

That skid isn’t a blip. It’s a full-season pattern catching up with a team that entered Sunday 18 games under .500. Emmet Sheehan gives the Dodgers a real chance to be efficient too — he’s struck out 99 in 87.2 innings, evidence of swing-and-miss stuff even in an up-and-down year, and against a Mets lineup that’s chasing more than it should lately, that’s a real advantage.

Injuries complicate things marginally for LA. Kiké Hernández remains without a firm return date, and the bullpen has been picking up innings without Blake Treinen, Tyler Glasnow or Blake Snell, all on extended absences with arm issues. But Dodgers relievers have had a soft workload the last two days of this series, and against a Mets club that just can’t find enough offense to make a low-scoring game close, that depth advantage should hold up on getaway day.

Worth noting: New York’s own bullpen has been stretched even thinner than LA’s. Reed Garrett, Clay Holmes and Justin Hagenman are all unavailable for the Mets, forcing manager Carlos Mendoza to lean on less proven arms in high-leverage spots, while the Dodgers can still turn to established late-inning options like Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia. That mismatch in relief depth matters plenty in a game with a total this high.

Prediction and Best Bet

Los Angeles has been the better team in every sense this season, and Sunday’s pitching matchup does nothing to change that. Expect the Dodgers to close out the series with a comfortable, if not dominant, win.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Dodgers 6, Mets 3
  2. Best Bet: Dodgers -1.5

With the Mets scuffling at this level for weeks now, betting against them to even keep this one within a run feels like the shrewder side of the number.
