Roki Sasaki has a home run problem, and Wednesday night at Truist Park he’s got to solve it against a Braves lineup that’s built to punish exactly that.
Quick take:
- Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers moneyline
- Why: Roki Sasaki gets the ball against a Braves rookie making just his third career start, and the Dodgers have the deeper, more dangerous lineup top to bottom
- The number to watch: AJ Smith-Shawver’s 6.23 ERA and 1.615 WHIP through 8.2 big-league innings
The Dodgers roll into Atlanta at 80-51, still chasing Milwaukee in the NL Central race from a distance but comfortably in control of the NL West. The Braves, at 76-55, have quietly climbed to the top of a thinning NL East and are riding a 42-23 mark at home — the best home record in their division. This is Game 2 of a three-game set, and it’s the kind of midweek series that tells you a lot about where both clubs stand with about five weeks left in the regular season.
Books have the Dodgers as moneyline favorites at roughly -130, with Atlanta getting a price near +110 as the home dog. The total sits around 8.5-9 runs, and it’s opened with the over getting more respect than you’d expect for a game started by a pitcher with a sub-.500 record. That’s Sasaki’s fingerprint on the number — he’s given up 21 home runs in 116 innings this season, and Atlanta’s lineup, even without some of its injured arms on the mound side, still has thump from Matt Olson, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Michael Harris II. Sasaki isn’t having a vintage year by his own standard — 5-5, 4.42 ERA, a 1.302 WHIP — but he’s still missing bats at a strong clip, with 114 strikeouts and an 8.85 K/9 over his 22 starts. The homer issue is real, yet even a homer-prone version of Sasaki is a significant step up from what Atlanta is throwing out there. AJ Smith-Shawver has all of two career starts and 8.2 innings in the big leagues, with a 6.23 ERA and a WHIP over 1.6. He’s already lost both games where a set spread existed, and Atlanta has never been favored on the moneyline in one of his outings this season.
Smith-Shawver has thrown 8.2 innings all season and allowed nine hits, five walks and just seven strikeouts.
That’s an incredibly small sample, but it’s also the exact profile that tends to produce the ugly middle-innings meltdown — deep counts, traffic on the bases, a bullpen forced into work earlier than planned. And Atlanta’s bullpen isn’t exactly fresh reinforcements right now. Spencer Strider and closer Robert Suarez are both out until at least September 18 with elbow issues, Joe Jimenez is shelved with a knee problem until mid-September, and Reynaldo Lopez has been dealing with his own knee trouble. That’s a lot of high-leverage innings missing from an Atlanta relief corps that would otherwise need to bail out a shaky start.
On the Dodgers side, Shohei Ohtani has been the engine — a .287 average, .388 on-base percentage and 30 home runs — and Freddie Freeman, back facing his old organization, is hitting .299 with an .829 OPS. Mookie Betts and Max Muncy add thump lower in the order, giving Los Angeles a lineup with far more margin for error against a shorthanded Atlanta bullpen than Atlanta has against a full-strength Dodgers relief group. It’s a classic superstar-heavy Dodgers alignment, and it’s the kind of top-of-the-order pressure that tends to snowball once a young starter loses the strike zone.
Atlanta isn’t without answers. Drake Baldwin has quietly been one of the better-hitting catchers in baseball this year, and Matt Olson’s power (36 home runs) means one mistake pitch from Sasaki can turn this into a track meet in a hurry. But depth matters over nine innings, and depth is exactly where the Dodgers separate themselves in this particular matchup.
This shapes up as exactly what the market says it is: a clearly better team with a clearly better starter, on the road, against a home team dealing with real bullpen attrition. Atlanta’s power bats can make it interesting, and Truist Park has been a tough place for visitors all year, but the pitching mismatch is too wide to bet against Sasaki here — even a homer or two allowed shouldn’t be enough to sink the Dodgers against this version of the Braves’ pitching staff.
The pick:
Take the over lean here as well if you’re looking to pair a bet — this lineup combination and the state of Atlanta’s bullpen point toward more scoring than a typical Sasaki start would suggest.
