The Dodgers have been here before, and they’ve got the one pitcher nobody wants to face with their season on the brink.
Quick take:
- Pick: Dodgers moneyline
- Why: Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been nearly unbeatable in October, and he’s already got a complete-game shutout of this exact Brewers lineup in last year’s NLCS
- The number to watch: Yamamoto’s 2.14 ERA across 11 career postseason appearances
Milwaukee stole Game 1, grinding out a 2-1 win behind Brice Turang’s go-ahead homer and a bullpen that turned 4 2/3 scoreless innings into a laid trap for the two-time defending champs. Jacob Misiorowski was good, not great, and it was enough. Now the Brewers hand the ball to a rookie making his fourth career postseason start, while the Dodgers counter with the single most dominant big-game arm baseball has seen in years.
Yamamoto’s history against this exact opponent, in this exact series, under these exact lights, is almost too clean to be real. Last October, facing elimination pressure of his own in NLCS Game 2 against Milwaukee, he threw the first complete game of his career — nine innings, four baserunners, seven strikeouts, a 5-1 win that flipped the series. He followed it with another complete game in the World Series. Dave Roberts doesn’t need to search for confidence here.
The Dodgers opened as solid favorites for Game 2, with moneyline prices hovering around -126 to -136 and the total sitting at 7. Anyone checking live MLB odds will see that number reflects two things: Yamamoto’s track record of shutting down lineups cold, and a Brewers offense that managed just two runs in Game 1 against a lineup that wasn’t even at full strength. Sportsbooks are also pricing Logan Henderson as a live underdog rather than a lamb to slaughter — Henderson beat the Dodgers twice during the regular season, allowing just one run across 12 innings, so the line isn’t assuming an automatic Dodgers blowout.
| Monday, October 12 at 5:10 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | -1.5 (120) | -136 | O 6.5 (-120) |
| Milwaukee Brewers | +1.5 (-157) | +119 | U 6.5 (-103) |
Both clubs arrive off NLDS series wins, but the form snapshots tell very different stories about which team is peaking and which is just surviving.

Among pitchers with at least 10 career postseason starts, Yamamoto ranks second all-time in WHIP (0.83) and opponent batting average (.175), and fifth in ERA (2.24). He’s 9-1 in his postseason starts and undefeated on the road — which matters, since Game 2 is in Milwaukee. He beat the Brewers twice in the regular season too, allowing just two earned runs across 13 innings. There isn’t a version of this matchup report where Milwaukee has beaten this version of Yamamoto before.
Where the Brewers can find hope is lineup chaos on L.A.’s side. Shohei Ohtani is working through lingering right biceps and left knee issues and hit just .157 over his final 18 regular-season games; he’s shown flickers of life — reaching base twice and scoring the Dodgers’ only Game 1 run — but he’s not fully right. Freddie Freeman is also managing a knee issue, and Will Smith is just 1-for-16 this postseason. If Milwaukee is going to push this series to 1-1, it likely needs Henderson to out-duel Yamamoto rather than the Dodgers’ lineup to simply show up — a tall ask against a pitcher of this caliber.
Yamamoto has a 1.23 ERA in the only three postseason starts he’s made coming off a loss.
That stat matters here. The Dodgers just lost Game 1. History says Yamamoto responds to exactly this kind of moment by getting better, not worse. Milwaukee’s lineup, even with Christian Yelich reportedly working back into a full-time role, hasn’t faced anything like peak Yamamoto this October — and their path to winning Game 2 almost certainly runs through Henderson matching a performance he’s never had to produce on this stage.
Henderson has been excellent in a vacuum — 11-3, 2.47 ERA, and he’s never allowed more than three runs in any of his 24 career starts including the postseason. He already has one standout moment this October, allowing just one earned run over five innings against San Diego in NLDS Game 2. But facing a lineup that includes Mookie Betts, Freeman, Ohtani, Teoscar Hernández, and Kyle Tucker for the first time in October is a different gauntlet than anything on his résumé, and the Brewers’ margin for error with a rookie on the mound against this kind of firepower is thin.
Milwaukee’s bullpen is the other variable worth watching. Trevor Megill, Abner Uribe, and Aaron Ashby combined to allow just three runs — one earned — across 19 2/3 innings in the NLDS, and that unit bailed out Misiorowski again in Game 1. If Henderson can get through five innings keeping the Dodgers within shouting distance, Milwaukee’s relievers have proven capable of stealing another low-scoring night. The problem is that plan requires Henderson to actually get through five, and no rookie has done that against this particular Dodgers lineup in the postseason yet.
The Dodgers even this series behind one of the best pitching performances the postseason has to offer. Henderson keeps Milwaukee competitive for a few innings, but the Dodgers’ lineup finds enough against the bullpen to back their ace, and this series heads back to Los Angeles tied at a game apiece.
The pick:
Betting against Yamamoto in an elimination-adjacent spot has been a losing proposition for two straight Octobers, and nothing about this Brewers lineup suggests Monday is the night that changes. For bettors looking to shop lines before first pitch, our DraftKings promo code is worth checking.
