Milwaukee has already clinched a playoff spot and needs just two wins (or two Cubs losses) to lock up a fourth straight NL Central title, and Jacob Misiorowski — the best pitcher in baseball not named Skenes this September — is on the mound to help finish the job.
Quick take:
- Pick: Brewers -1.5
- Why: Misiorowski’s 1.95 ERA and 236 strikeouts dwarf a Pirates lineup that’s scuffled against elite velocity all year
- The number to watch: Misiorowski’s 0.80 WHIP, first in the National League
The Brewers roll into PNC Park at 93-57, a franchise-record 36 games over .500, having already punched their ticket to October with an 8-1 run over their last nine games. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, sits at 75-75 and has quietly won seven of its last ten, playing spoiler while chasing its first non-losing season since 2018. There’s pride on the line for the Pirates even with nothing left to play for in the standings.
Sportsbooks have made Milwaukee a heavy favorite, with the moneyline sitting around -260 and the run line at -1.5 (-140-ish depending on the book). Check the latest MLB odds before first pitch since these numbers can move. The total has settled at 7.5 runs. That price reflects the pitching mismatch as much as the standings gap — Misiorowski (14-5, 1.95 ERA) draws Lake Bachar (1-3, 3.52 ERA), a rookie right-hander who’s given the Pirates innings down the stretch but has allowed plenty of hard contact along the way. Books rarely lay -260 on a road team against a division rival unless the starting pitching disparity is this stark.
Milwaukee dropped its last game before this series but has otherwise been relentless, while Pittsburgh has actually been the hotter team over the last ten outings. The form snapshot below tells two different stories about how each club got here.

Misiorowski leads all of MLB in strikeouts (236) and WHIP (0.80) and ranks first in the NL in ERA among qualified starters at 1.95. He’s been dominant in September too, striking out 14 batters over his last two starts, including a win over the Cubs on Sept. 2. When he’s locating his triple-digit fastball, lineups simply don’t see enough of it to catch up — Pittsburgh ranks in the bottom half of the league in strikeout rate against hard-throwing righties this season.
That said, the Pirates aren’t devoid of thump. Bryan Reynolds remains one of the more disciplined bats in that lineup, and Oneil Cruz has had stretches of real power all year, homering as recently as this past week during Pittsburgh’s series in Chicago. Ryan O’Hearn has also been a steady professional bat capable of turning around a fastball that catches too much plate, even against a pitcher of Misiorowski’s caliber.
Misiorowski has walked just 41 batters in 161.1 innings this season — a 0.80 WHIP that leads all of MLB.
That command is what separates this matchup from a typical ace-versus-rebuilding-lineup script. Pittsburgh can’t simply wait him out and hope for free baserunners; the Pirates will have to earn contact against elite stuff, and Bachar on the other side doesn’t have nearly the same margin for error against a Brewers order that’s scored 778 runs this year, tops in the National League.
Milwaukee’s lineup, even in a “get in, win, get out” spot with the division all but wrapped up, has shown no signs of taking its foot off the gas. Christian Yelich called the postseason push “extremely hard” even in a runaway year, and that mentality has kept the Brewers sharp during a stretch when plenty of clinched teams coast.
Misiorowski’s stuff, plus a Brewers lineup that leads the league in runs scored, should be enough to cover even on the road against a scrappy Pirates club that’s earned its recent winning stretch more through resilience than raw talent. Pittsburgh will scratch across a run or two, but this shapes up as a comfortable night for the division champs.
The pick:
Lay the run line here — Misiorowski against this version of the Pirates lineup is as close to a mismatch as September baseball gets, and Milwaukee has too much incentive to keep its foot down.
