The Brewers have already won this series twice this week, and now they get a shot at the sweep with the best pitcher in baseball’s second half on the mound.
Quick take:
- Pick: Milwaukee Brewers -1.5
- Why: Logan Henderson is dealing, Kevin Gausman is scuffling, and the Brewers have the Cubs’ number all season
- The number to watch: Henderson’s 2.48 ERA and 0.83 WHIP against Gausman’s 4.52 ERA
Milwaukee rolls into Thursday night at Wrigley Field sitting at 86-53 and cruising toward another NL Central title, up roughly eight games on Chicago with less than a month to play. The Cubs, at 78-61, are trying to hang onto a wild card spot while dropping two straight to their closest rival, and a third straight loss would be a brutal way to close out this four-game set.
This series has already been a rollercoaster. Chicago blitzed Milwaukee 17-3 in the opener, looking like a team ready to make a statement. The Brewers answered with a 9-4 win behind a Christian Yelich go-ahead homer, then followed it up with another 9-5 victory. Now it’s Henderson against Gausman in the finale, and the pitching matchup tilts hard in Milwaukee’s favor.
Despite the pitching mismatch, the odds market is surprisingly even. Milwaukee opened as roughly a -1.5 run favorite with plus-money on the run line, while the moneyline sits close to a pick’em in the -108 to -115 range on both sides. The total has been set at 8.5, reflecting two lineups that have combined for 28 runs in three games this week. Bettors who want to shop lines before placing anything can check the latest MLB odds to see how the number moves closer to first pitch. Books are clearly pricing in Wrigley’s hitter-friendly reputation and a shaky Cubs bullpen more than they’re pricing in Henderson’s dominance, which is exactly where the value shows up for bettors willing to lean on the starting pitcher gap.

Logan Henderson has quietly turned into one of the best young arms in the National League. He’s 9-2 with a 2.48 ERA and a minuscule 0.83 WHIP across 76.1 innings, striking out 86 batters against just 14 walks. That’s the profile of a pitcher who limits both hard contact and free baserunners, which matters enormously against a Cubs lineup that can do damage in bunches at Wrigley when the wind is blowing out.
Gausman, on the other hand, has been living dangerously all year. He’s 8-11 with a 4.52 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP, and while his strikeout numbers (156 on the season) show the stuff is still there, he’s allowed 155 hits and 20 home runs across 155.1 innings. Ian Happ has been one of the lone bright spots for Chicago’s offense this season, hitting .220 with 23 home runs and 61 RBI, and he’ll need a big night from the middle of the order to help Gausman weather the damage he tends to give up. Fans hoping to watch this one in person can check ticket options through GameTime, since Wrigley crowds tend to get loud fast when the Cubs are chasing a series split.
It’s worth remembering just how lopsided Sunday’s opener really was. A 17-3 final is the kind of score that can skew perception of a series, and it did plenty of damage to Milwaukee’s bullpen ERA for the week even though the Brewers have outscored Chicago in the two games since. That kind of split — one disaster outing sandwiched between two comfortable wins — is common in September series between division rivals playing out the string on different agendas. The Cubs are fighting for their playoff lives; the Brewers are mostly playing for seeding and health.
Henderson has walked just 14 batters in 76.1 innings all season — a control profile that neutralizes exactly the kind of chaotic, big-inning offense the Cubs have leaned on this week.
Yelich has been the other x-factor. He’s hitting .370 (10-for-27) with five extra-base hits over his last eight games, and he delivered the go-ahead homer in Tuesday’s win. When Milwaukee’s lineup gets that kind of push from the top, it takes pressure off a bullpen that’s dealt with its own injury attrition this year. The Cubs, meanwhile, are already missing Dansby Swanson (10-day IL, side) and starter Edward Cabrera, thinning out a roster that can’t afford more holes with a wild card race still very much alive.
Milwaukee’s lineup is peaking at the right time, and Henderson gives them exactly the kind of shutdown look that stops a series from slipping away. The Cubs have shown they can erupt against this pitching staff, as Sunday proved, but Henderson isn’t the same caliber of arm that got hit for 17 runs.
The pick:
Fade the public coin-flip pricing here — Henderson’s control and Milwaukee’s hot bats make this closer to a Brewers laugher than a pick’em.
