White Sox vs. Guardians Prediction: Cleveland’s Hot Streak Meets Chicago’s Slump in AL Central Showdown

A half-game separates first and second place in the AL Central, and the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians are about to spend three nights settling it face to face.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Cleveland Guardians moneyline
  • Why: Cleveland is red-hot at 6-4 over its last 10 while Chicago has cratered to 3-7, and Gavin Williams gives the Guardians a clear starting pitching edge.
  • The number to watch: White Sox hitters are batting just .205 as a team over their last 10 games.

Chicago enters Monday at 76-73 and clinging to first place in the division, but the White Sox have lost seven of their last 10 and are limping into Progressive Field on a one-game skid. Cleveland, sitting at 76-74, has quietly won six of its last 10 and trails by just half a game with three head-to-head matchups left to close the gap.

A Tight Race Just Got Tighter

The moneyline reflects that momentum shift. Cleveland opened as a home favorite around -154, with Chicago sitting near +124, and the total is set at 7 runs. That line is a notable reversal from earlier in the year, when the White Sox held a 6-4 edge in the season series and looked like the sturdier club. Bettors checking live MLB odds tonight will see the market has shifted firmly toward Cleveland, essentially wagering that the Guardians’ recent form and pitching matchup outweigh Chicago’s slight cushion in the standings.

Recent Form

The gap in the underlying numbers is stark: Cleveland is hitting .246 with a 4.45 ERA over its last 10, while Chicago has scuffled to a .205 team average in the same stretch even though the White Sox have actually been outscored by nine fewer runs than expected. The head-to-head log below shows just how competitive this season series has been despite Chicago’s 6-4 edge.

Newcomb vs. Williams Tips the Scale

The pitching matchup favors Cleveland on paper. Gavin Williams takes the mound at 13-7 with a 3.78 ERA and 228 strikeouts on the season, a workhorse effort that’s kept the Guardians afloat all summer. Sean Newcomb starts for Chicago at just 2-4 with a 2.77 ERA, a smaller sample that hasn’t been fully tested against a lineup like Cleveland’s that leans on contact and situational hitting.

Chase DeLauter has been Cleveland’s most consistent bat all year, hitting .291 with 14 home runs and 54 RBIs, and Steven Kwan has caught fire lately, going 13-for-41 with a homer over his last 10 games. Jose Ramirez, meanwhile, has cooled significantly — he’s batting just .111 over his first 11 games in September and was given a rest day Sunday, which takes some thump out of the middle of Cleveland’s order even as the team wins around him.

On the other side, Andrew Benintendi remains Chicago’s steadiest presence at .241 with 14 home runs and 70 RBIs, and Randal Grichuk has been a bright spot recently, going 10-for-25 with two homers and six RBIs over his last 10 games. Sam Antonacci leads the White Sox in average at .269, but outside of a few hot bats, Chicago’s offense has largely gone quiet during this slide.

The White Sox are hitting .205 as a team over their last 10 games — the single biggest reason to fade them here.

That kind of offensive freeze is hard to trust against a starter with swing-and-miss stuff like Williams. Cleveland doesn’t need to be spectacular offensively when its pitching is missing bats and Chicago’s lineup is producing this little.

Injuries complicate both sides a bit. Cleveland is without Rhys Hoskins and dealing with Chase DeLauter as day-to-day with a hamstring issue, while Chicago’s injury list is considerably longer, including Tommy Pham and Joey Bart among several others sidelined. Neither team is at full strength, but Cleveland’s absences are more isolated than Chicago’s.

Prediction and Best Bet

Cleveland’s pitching advantage and recent surge outweigh Chicago’s slim standings lead heading into this series opener. The Guardians have the better arm on the mound and the hotter bats behind him, even with Ramirez in a funk.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Cleveland Guardians 5, Chicago White Sox 3
  2. Best Bet: Cleveland Guardians on the moneyline

Fade the White Sox’s cold bats and trust Gavin Williams to keep this AL Central race a dogfight through the final weeks.
