Washington has already clinched a playoff spot, but Chicago still has one job tonight: play spoiler and keep pace in a crowded race for the East’s final berths.
Quick take:
- Pick: Washington Mystics -1.5
- Why: The Mystics are the deeper, more efficient team and Chicago is playing without its top three scoring options.
- The number to watch: Washington is shooting 48.3% from the field over its last 10 games, nearly five points better than Chicago’s opponents have allowed.
The Mystics (24-16) roll into Wintrust Arena on a two-game winning streak and sit sixth in the league in offensive efficiency down the stretch, averaging 86.5 points over their last 10 outings while limiting opponents to 83.5. Chicago (15-25) has been in freefall for weeks, going 4-6 in its last 10 and shipping 88.7 points a night to opposing offenses. Washington swept the first meeting between these two clubs back in June, winning 90-72 as heavy favorites, and little about Chicago’s roster situation has improved since then.
Washington opened as a 3.5-point favorite before the number settled closer to -1.5 by tip-off, with the total sitting at 165.5. That line movement suggests bettors see this closer than the season series would indicate — Chicago has actually covered the spread more often than not this year (21-17 ATS) even while losing games outright. The moneyline has Washington around -134 and Chicago near +110, which is relatively tight for a matchup between a playoff team and a squad four games under .500. Bettors weighing a small favorite like this one might also compare a few DraftKings promo code offers before placing anything.

Washington’s form over the last month has been steadier across the board — better shooting efficiency, better defense, and no length-of-season injuries to account for. Chicago’s numbers below reflect a team that’s essentially been remaking its rotation on the fly since May.

Chicago’s season took a brutal turn when Rickea Jackson tore her ACL in May, and it got worse when Skylar Diggins went down with a season-ending knee injury of her own in late August. That’s left Kamilla Cardoso, the 6-foot-7 center out of South Carolina, as the engine of an offense that has to generate everything else around her. Cardoso is averaging 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds on 54.8% shooting, a legitimately efficient two-way anchor, but she can’t replace two lost perimeter scorers by herself. DiJonai Carrington is also day-to-day with a foot issue that’s limited her since late August, which only tightens Chicago’s available depth further.
Washington is shooting 48.3% from the field over its last 10 games while holding opponents to 83.5 points a night.
Washington will be without Sonia Citron, who’s out for personal reasons, but the Mystics have enough scoring balance to absorb that. Citron has quietly been having an All-Star-caliber year in her own right, averaging 16.8 points, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals a night, so her absence isn’t nothing. But Kiki Iriafen has been a load on the glass all season, pulling down 9.4 rebounds a game, and Brittney Sykes gives Washington a proven closer in the backcourt who can create her own shot when a possession breaks down. That’s the difference in this matchup: Chicago is trying to survive with one reliable weapon, while Washington still has multiple answers even with a key piece unavailable.
The Mystics also have the size advantage on the boards most nights, and against a Sky team that’s had to lean heavily on Cardoso in the paint, second-chance opportunities could tilt this one in Washington’s favor. Natasha Cloud has kept Chicago’s offense organized as the primary facilitator, dishing 4.9 assists a game, but ball movement alone hasn’t been able to offset the raw scoring punch Washington still has available.
Depth matters more late in a lost season than most box scores show. Chicago’s bench has had to absorb minutes it never planned for once Jackson and Diggins went down, and that kind of roster strain tends to show up most in the fourth quarter, when Washington’s rotation is fresher and more experienced in close games.
Washington’s depth and defensive consistency should be enough to control this game even on the road, especially against a Chicago roster missing two of its top three scorers for the season. The Sky have shown they can hang around and cover, but the moneyline value isn’t quite juicy enough to chase given how thin Chicago’s rotation has become.
The pick:
Washington’s balance wins out over Chicago’s reliance on one player, and that gap should be enough to cover even a small number on the road.
