This series just got turned completely upside down. Minnesota holds a 3-1 lead over the Denver Nuggets heading into Game 5 at Ball Arena, which should be a story about the Timberwolves controlling a series against a higher seed. Instead, the entire conversation has shifted to the injury report. Anthony Edwards hyperextended his knee during Game 4 and is expected to miss multiple weeks per ESPN. Donte DiVincenzo tore his Achilles just 79 seconds into that same game. Minnesota is heading to Denver short-handed and still trying to close out a series against Nikola Jokic.
The chaos of Game 4 went beyond the injuries. Jokic and Julius Randle were both ejected in the fourth quarter following a physical altercation with Jaden McDaniels. Jokic’s status for Game 5 has to be monitored given the ejection, though he is expected to be available. Randle’s ejection adds another layer of uncertainty to Denver’s plans. Despite all of it, the basketball result was Minnesota winning 112-96, with Ayo Dosunmu delivering an extraordinary 43-point performance on 13-of-17 shooting. The Wolves somehow kept winning even as everything around them fell apart.
The oddsmakers have responded decisively to the injury news. Denver is installed as -515 favorites, with Minnesota coming back at +386. The Nuggets are favored by 10.5 points on the spread, and the over/under sits at 222.5 total points. Those are extraordinary numbers for a team that is down 3-1 in a series, but the books clearly believe Edwards and DiVincenzo being out is a devastating enough blow to flip the dynamics. It probably is. But Minnesota has found ways to win this series even when nothing should be working in their favor.
If there is any reason to believe Minnesota can still win tonight, it begins with Ayo Dosunmu. He has been sensational in this series, averaging 22.8 points per game on 64% shooting. His combined 66-point output in the two Timberwolves home wins has been the kind of unexpected heroism that playoff runs are made of. With Edwards out, Dosunmu becomes the primary offensive option alongside Randle, and the rest of the Minnesota roster will need to elevate significantly.
Julius Randle had been averaging 17.5 points per game in this series before his ejection, and he is the closest thing to a legitimate second star that Minnesota has available tonight. Rudy Gobert provides the defensive anchor and has grabbed 11 rebounds per game in this series. The Timberwolves’ defensive structure under Chris Finch remains intact even without Edwards — they are not going to suddenly become a soft team defensively. But replacing the offensive gravity that Edwards provides is simply impossible over the course of a single game or series.
Denver’s Jokic has been a force throughout, averaging 25 points, 14.5 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game in this series. Jamal Murray has been the perfect complement with 26.5 points per game. Aaron Gordon is listed as questionable with a calf injury, and Peyton Watson has not played at all in this series, giving Denver their own injury concerns. But Jokic on his home floor, fighting to stay alive in a series, is one of the most dangerous forces in basketball. If he shows up with the urgency the moment demands, Denver covers easily.
The Nuggets went 3-1 in this series through regular Game 4 action, winning Game 1 convincingly before Minnesota ran off three straight wins. Ball Arena has been a fortress for Denver in recent playoff years, and this crowd will be at maximum volume for a must-win game. Minnesota without Edwards is a very different offensive team. They averaged 112.3 points per game in this series with him; without him, generating enough offense to keep pace with a Jokic-led Denver team at altitude is a genuine challenge.
Denver wins Game 5. The injuries to Edwards and DiVincenzo are too significant to overcome in a road game against Jokic. Dosunmu can be a hero again, but Minnesota cannot rely on one player to carry them through 48 minutes in a building where the crowd will be frantic. Jokic will be motivated after the ejection controversy, Murray will support him, and Denver will make this a series again by winning tonight convincingly. The Nuggets covering -10.5 at home is absolutely in play given the matchup.
Minnesota has been a remarkable story in this series despite everything going wrong, but covering 10.5 points in Denver without Anthony Edwards strains credulity. The Nuggets at home, with Jokic motivated and the series on the line, are one of the most reliable covers in playoff basketball. Bet the spread here rather than the moneyline — Denver wins and wins big, but paying -515 for the ML is not necessary when the spread at -10.5 gives you better value for the same outcome.
