Notre Dame will open its season without one of its most anticipated newcomers. Wide receiver Quincy Porter has been ruled out for the Fighting Irish’s Week 1 matchup against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, On3.com’s Kyle Kelly reported Sunday, as the sophomore continues working back from a lingering kneecap injury.

Porter, a former five-star recruit who transferred in from Ohio State, has been dealing with a left patellar issue dating back to a January surgery and has yet to practice at full speed through fall camp. Head coach Marcus Freeman had signaled the timeline was tight all preseason, and the team now confirms Porter won’t be ready for Sunday’s marquee opener against the Badgers.

A Setback for a Player Who Was Supposed to Start

Porter’s absence matters more than a typical WR3 injury. He was in the mix to start immediately for Notre Dame after arriving via the transfer portal, and Freeman had been optimistic in recent weeks that a “minor procedure” would speed up his return. Instead, Porter will miss the opener and is now targeting a return for the Irish’s home game against Rice on Sept. 12.

Porter appeared in five games for Ohio State last season, catching four passes for 59 yards across 57 offensive snaps before the kneecap injury flared up and eventually led to surgery and a transfer. He missed all of spring practice in South Bend recovering, then was limited throughout fall camp. Without him, Notre Dame will lean on receivers like Micah Gilbert and Mylan Graham to soak up additional snaps in the season opener.

Porter isn’t the only name on Notre Dame’s injury report ahead of Wisconsin. Linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, who is working back from a torn ACL in his left knee — the second ACL tear of his career — is listed as questionable for the opener. Viliamu-Asa was productive before the injury, racking up 48 tackles, three sacks, an interception and two pass breakups over 11 games last season, and he’s projected as the primary backup at middle linebacker behind Drayk Bowen. Whether he suits up appears to be a game-time decision, and coaches have suggested there’s little incentive to rush him back if the outcome isn’t in question.

The timing puts a spotlight on just how much national title buzz already surrounds this Notre Dame team. The Fighting Irish enter the season at -800 to make the College Football Playoff, among the shortest odds of any team in the country, while quarterback CJ Carr carries +700 Heisman Trophy odds as one of the favorites for the award. Notre Dame is also tied for the second-best national championship odds in the sport, and its regular-season win total sits at 11.5 — a number that reflects expectations of a near-flawless campaign.

Those figures are exactly why an injury to a player who was never expected to have his season start on the sideline draws attention from market watchers. Carr’s supporting cast was viewed as a strength heading into the year, and Porter’s absence — even if framed as short-term — is the kind of subtraction that can quietly influence how sharp bettors and oddsmakers assess Notre Dame’s opening-week margins and its receiver room depth over the season’s first few weeks. Futures prices built around an elite ceiling tend to be most vulnerable to exactly this type of preseason attrition, particularly at a skill position the offense was counting on for immediate production.
