SEC Will Require Mandatory Sports Gambling Education for All Athletes Before the 2026-27 Season

The Southeastern Conference announced at its spring meetings in Destin, Florida that it will mandate sports gambling education for every athlete in the conference before the start of the 2026-27 athletic year. The program will be delivered via a custom-designed educational video developed in partnership with IC360, formerly US Integrity, a firm that monitors US sportsbook markets for suspicious betting activity linked to potential integrity violations. The mandate represents one of the most comprehensive conference-level sports gambling education requirements in college athletics.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement: “The Southeastern Conference remains committed to supporting its member institutions and student-athletes through proactive education, monitoring, and resources that promote integrity and protect the student-athlete experience.” The SEC spans 16 major universities and oversees competition across football, basketball, baseball, and a wide range of Olympic sports, meaning the mandate will cover thousands of student-athletes when it takes effect.

Why the SEC Is Acting Now

The announcement comes as legal sports betting continues to expand across the United States and the volume of money wagered on college sports reaches record levels. Legal US sportsbooks handled billions of dollars in college football and basketball bets in 2025, and the sports betting industry’s growth has been accompanied by a steady increase in integrity investigations involving college athletes. Several high-profile cases in recent years have involved student-athletes either placing prohibited bets on their own sports or providing inside information to gamblers. The combination of increased betting volume and the growing financial profile of college athletes through NIL deals has heightened the risk of manipulation attempts.

IC360 monitors real-time betting data from licensed US sportsbooks and alerts conferences, universities, and regulators when unusual patterns emerge that might suggest match fixing or insider information trading. By embedding IC360 in its educational program rather than just in its monitoring activities, the SEC is ensuring athletes understand not only what they are prohibited from doing but also how they might be approached and what the consequences are for violations. The move aligns with similar programs at the professional sports level, where major leagues have long required gambling integrity training as part of rookie orientation.

What It Means for Sports Bettors

For sports bettors who wager on SEC football, basketball, and other conference events, the mandate is a positive development that signals the conference is taking integrity seriously in a high-volume betting market. A better-educated athlete population and robust monitoring infrastructure reduce the risk that games are compromised, which is a prerequisite for fair and meaningful wagering. Whether you follow Illinois sports betting or monitor betting trends in any other state, the integrity of the underlying athletic competition is fundamental to the entire sports betting ecosystem. The SEC’s program sets a standard that other conferences are likely to face pressure to match in the coming years.
