Red Sox vs. Pirates Prediction: Skenes Ready to Slow Down Boston at PNC Park

Boston just got embarrassed at PNC Park on Friday, and now they hand the ball to a soft-tossing lefty trying to slow down the hottest arm in the National League.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Pirates +1.5 on the run line
  • Why: Paul Skenes on the mound against a Red Sox offense that just got shut down and a Boston bullpen that’s been leaking runs all series
  • The number to watch: Skenes has a 3.13 xERA that’s actually better than his 3.88 ERA, meaning the results have been unlucky, not the stuff

Boston came into Pittsburgh with a 9.5-game cushion over .500 and a bullpen that had carried them through a scorching stretch, but Friday’s 8-4 loss showed some cracks. Jake Bennett got roughed up again, and the Pirates — a team still floating 16.5 games back in the NL Central — looked like the more dangerous club for nine innings. Now it’s Patrick Sandoval’s turn to try to salvage the middle game of this set, and he draws an assignment nobody wants: facing the reigning National League Cy Young-caliber arm on his home mound.

Where the Line Opened and What It Means

Boston is still the moneyline favorite here, hovering right around -120 in the early market, but that number reflects name value and division standing more than what’s actually happened on the mound this series. Books have installed the Red Sox at roughly -1.5 on the run line with a total sitting in the mid-to-high 7s, but sharp money has been quietly nibbling at Pittsburgh, and it’s not hard to see why once you put Skenes’ underlying numbers next to Sandoval’s workload since coming back from a long layoff. Checking the MLB odds board before first pitch is worth it, since these lines have been moving throughout the day.

Recent Form

Boston’s last 10 games tell two different stories depending on which stretch you’re looking at, while Pittsburgh has been scuffling against a soft schedule until Friday’s breakthrough. The head-to-head log below is still building since tracking started this summer, but the form gap right now favors the home club more than the standings suggest.

Skenes Is Better Than His Record Says

Don’t let the 9-11 record fool you. Paul Skenes is striking out 30% of the batters he faces this year and inducing hard contact at a lower rate than his career averages, but Pittsburgh’s offense and defense have bailed him out of almost nothing — his 3.88 ERA sits well above his 3.13 expected ERA, which is one of the widest gaps of any qualified starter in baseball. That’s a pitcher getting unlucky, not declining. He’s thrown at least six innings in each of his last two starts and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of his last four, including a strong outing against a Miami lineup that gave Pittsburgh’s rotation fits most of the series.

Patrick Sandoval, meanwhile, is only six starts into his return to a big-league mound after more than two years away from live MLB action. His surface numbers — a 3.30 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP — look respectable on paper, but the walk rate is the real story. He’s issued 13 walks in just 30 innings, and against a Pirates lineup that’s shown more patience than its .480 winning percentage would suggest, that kind of control slippage tends to get punished.

Skenes owns a 3.13 xERA against a 3.88 actual ERA — one of the largest bad-luck gaps of any starter in the National League this season.

That gap matters here. Facing a Red Sox lineup that just got walloped by Bubba Chandler and Pittsburgh’s bullpen a day earlier, Skenes projects as a pitcher due for positive regression at exactly the wrong time for Boston. The Red Sox have also been dealing with real injury attrition in the outfield mix and are relying on a lineup that’s shown swings of five and six unanswered runs on both sides over the past two weeks — capable of exploding, but also prone to going cold against a starter who commands the zone the way Skenes does.

Add in that Sandoval is working on a short track record of stamina in 2026, and Boston’s bullpen — gassed after several bullpen games down the stretch of the Toronto series — is not the same unit that carried this team’s hot streak in late July and early August.

Prediction and Best Bet

This lines up as a lower-scoring, pitcher-driven game with Pittsburgh in a real spot to either win outright or keep it within a run. Boston’s floor as a team is still higher than Pittsburgh’s, and Sandoval has enough swing-and-miss stuff to keep this competitive, but Skenes’ recent form and the regression math both point toward a tight finish at PNC Park.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Pirates 4, Red Sox 3
  2. Best Bet: Pirates +1.5 on the run line

Lay off the Red Sox moneyline here — with Skenes overdue for a clean start and Boston’s bullpen taxed, the value is squarely on Pittsburgh covering at home.
