Polymarket Trader Loses $999,000 on Spain vs. Cabo Verde as Goalkeeper Vozinha Pulls Off World Cup Miracle

Monday’s 0-0 draw between Spain and Cabo Verde in Atlanta will be remembered for many things: Vozinha’s seven saves, the shock of the tournament’s co-favorites being held scoreless, and the jaw-dropping validation of Cabo Verde’s defensive resilience. But in the prediction markets, it will be remembered primarily for one thing — a $999,068 position that went to zero.

A single Polymarket user placed $999,068 on Spain to beat Cabo Verde in the Group H opener. At the time of the bet, Spain was given a 92% chance of winning the match. The reigning European champion was one of the co-favorites to lift the World Cup trophy in its entirety, carrying 16% tournament outright odds. It looked like a near-certain payout for a modest $86,875.48 in profit.

Instead, 40-year-old Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha turned in one of the great individual performances in World Cup history, and Spain went home from Atlanta with one point instead of three.

How the Match Played Out

Spain dominated possession — controlling 74% of the ball — and generated 2.1 expected goals across 90 minutes. By every statistical measure, they should have won comfortably. Vozinha had other plans. He made seven saves, including a crucial late stop on a Cabo Verde header that almost ended the match differently, and left Spanish attackers Lamine Yamal and the rest of La Roja’s star-studded lineup without a goal to show for their efforts.

Cabo Verde — a nation of approximately 530,000 people, smaller than Sacramento — had entered the match as the most obscure David in a World Cup full of them. When the final whistle blew, the country’s goalkeeper instantly became a global celebrity. His Instagram following jumped from roughly 50,000 to 5.7 million in the hours following the match.

For bettors and prediction market traders, Cabo Verde’s draw was a reminder that in international football, 92% is not 100%. Those looking to follow World Cup prediction market action can access regulated trading through platforms accessible with a DraftKings Promo Code.

The Kalshi Flip Side

While the Polymarket trader watched nearly $1 million disappear, another trader on Kalshi was biting their fingernails through 90 minutes of Spain possession before emerging with a $96,347.21 profit. Kalshi disclosed before kickoff that a user had placed $2,312,333 on Cabo Verde failing to beat Spain — a position that paid out $2,408,680 with a draw or a Spanish win.

The two positions are a perfect illustration of how prediction markets work: entirely different users, with different platforms, taking positions on opposite sides of the same event, with wildly different financial outcomes based on a 0-0 scoreline.

The Kalshi trader’s position was essentially the same as the Polymarket trader’s in one respect: both needed the match not to end with a Cabo Verde win. The difference was the stakes and the exact structure of the contract. The Polymarket user needed Spain to win outright; a draw was as bad as a loss. The Kalshi user just needed Spain not to lose.

What It Means for Group H

The draw reshuffled the Group H outlook significantly. Spain’s probability of winning the group fell from 81% at kickoff to 73% after the final whistle — still heavy favorites, but now with less margin for error. The tournament odds tightened, too, with other contenders picking up percentage points as Spain’s path narrowed.

Cabo Verde remains a long shot to advance. Their probability of winning the group sits at just 3%, and they carry the highest likelihood of finishing last in the group at 44%, just ahead of Saudi Arabia. Their next test against Uruguay — a 67% favorite per Polymarket — will test whether Monday’s performance was a genuine statement or a stunning anomaly.

Spain, for their part, will need to regroup against Saudi Arabia next. The market prices an 88% chance of a Spanish win in that one. After Monday, bettors will at least be pricing in some uncertainty they weren’t before.
