Nebraska Names Anthony Colandrea Week 1 Starting Quarterback Over TJ Lateef and Daniel Kaelin

Nebraska has its quarterback answer. Head coach Matt Rhule announced Saturday that Anthony Colandrea, the UNLV and Virginia transfer, will start at quarterback when the Cornhuskers open the 2026 season at home against Ohio on Sept. 5. The decision closes out a summer-long competition and settles the most important storyline in Lincoln since Dylan Raiola left for Oregon.

Colandrea beat out sophomores TJ Lateef and Daniel Kaelin for the job, with Rhule leaving little doubt about how clear the choice was. “Anthony would play for us right now,” Rhule told reporters following Nebraska’s second fall scrimmage. Lateef had started Nebraska’s final four games of 2025 after Raiola went down with a season-ending injury, giving him real in-game experience against Big Ten competition, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the older, more battle-tested transfer.

A Grad Transfer With a Track Record

Colandrea isn’t walking into Lincoln as an unknown. He arrives with 31 career starts across three seasons split between Virginia (2023-24) and UNLV (2025), and he’s coming off the best year of his career. In 2025, he was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 3,459 yards with 23 touchdowns against nine interceptions while adding 649 rushing yards and 10 more scores on the ground. That dual-threat production is exactly the profile Rhule’s staff prioritized when the quarterback room opened up after Raiola’s transfer to Oregon.

The competition wasn’t a formality. Lateef pushed Colandrea throughout fall camp, and Kaelin remained in the mix as well, but the volume of live snaps and proven ceiling Colandrea brings clearly separated him. His first start for the Huskers comes against an Ohio team that will be looking to spring an early upset in Lincoln, but Nebraska now enters that game with its starting job settled well ahead of kickoff rather than sorting it out in-season.

What It Means for Nebraska’s Betting Markets

The quarterback resolution lands at a moment when Nebraska’s season-long numbers are already drawing attention from bettors. The Cornhuskers’ 2026 win total sits at 6.5 across the major boards, with BetMGM pricing the over at +115 and the under at -140, while Action Network listed Nebraska’s win total at the same 6.5 with an over lean at +115. Nebraska is priced in the range of +15000 to +17500 to win the Big Ten depending on the book, squarely in the middle tier of the conference behind heavy favorites Ohio State and Oregon.

None of those numbers were built in a vacuum — a settled, experienced starter at quarterback is one of the clearest inputs oddsmakers weigh when setting a win total for a program replacing its offensive centerpiece. Nebraska ranks near the top 10 nationally in returning experience, and with Colandrea’s college resume now anchoring the passing game, the roster continuity argument behind the current win total gets stronger rather than weaker. A messy, unresolved quarterback battle carrying into September would have been the kind of variable that pushes bettors toward the under; instead, Nebraska heads into fall camp’s final stretch with clarity at the position that matters most, reinforcing why several handicappers are already leaning toward Nebraska clearing its number in 2026.
