Michigan Benches Bryce Underwood for Freshman Tommy Carr Against Penn State: Betting Market Fallout

Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham benched sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood at halftime of Saturday’s Big Ten game against Penn State at Michigan Stadium, turning the offense over to true freshman Tommy Carr after the Wolverines went scoreless through two quarters and trailed 3-0. Underwood, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class, threw two first-half interceptions and struggled with accuracy, and Michigan managed just 80 yards of offense before the break.

The move came in a game both programs badly needed. Michigan (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) entered on a two-game losing streak after a 20-19 loss to Iowa and a 20-14 defeat at Minnesota, while Penn State (3-3, 0-3) arrived having lost three straight to open conference play under first-year coach Matt Campbell. Whittingham is also in his first season in Ann Arbor, and the pressure to change the quarterback position had built for weeks.

Tommy Carr Gives Michigan a Spark

Carr is a former four-star recruit from Saline, Michigan, and the grandson of former Wolverines head coach Lloyd Carr. Before Saturday he had appeared in only one game this season, completing both of his pass attempts against UTEP. He is also the younger brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr. The crowd at the Big House responded loudly when he took the field, and his first career completion was an 11-yard pass to JJ Buchanan for a first down.

The change worked quickly. On Carr’s second possession, Bryson Kuzdzal broke a 43-yard touchdown run after Penn State lost containment on the edge, giving Michigan its first points of the day and a 7-3 lead. After Chris Bracy intercepted Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht, Michigan drove the field again, and Jordan Marshall scored from the goal line to make it 14-3. The Wolverines gained 146 yards in the third quarter alone, only 36 of them through the air, as the run game and Carr’s designed runs did most of the work.

Penn State answered early in the fourth quarter. Carson Hansen scored on a toss play and the Nittany Lions converted a two-point try to cut the margin to 14-11 with 11:40 remaining. That was the last verified score at the time of writing, so the final result is not included here. Becht had thrown a pair of third-quarter interceptions, continuing a pattern of strong starts that fade in the second half.

Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck had defended Underwood earlier in the week, saying the quarterback cares, works hard and was handling the outside noise well. The numbers have been difficult to defend: Underwood had thrown three interceptions across the Wolverines’ last two losses, and Michigan ranked 117th nationally at roughly 180.8 passing yards per game entering the weekend.

What the Quarterback Change Means for the Betting Market

Michigan opened as a home favorite in this matchup, and the number sat at Michigan -6.5 at most books for much of the week, with moneylines around Michigan -235 and Penn State +190 and a total of 42.5. A few offshore listings showed 6 points. Both teams had been struggling against the number: Michigan failed to cover in each of its last two games, while Penn State had failed to cover in three straight, including last week’s 31-23 loss to USC as a 1.5-point underdog.

The market had little faith in Underwood heading in. Public discussion centered on his play, and one prop at an offshore book had his passing total set at 173.5 yards. A switch to Carr changes that picture. Carr has almost no career sample, so pricing him is largely guesswork, but the early results suggest Michigan’s offense can lean on a rushing attack and a defense that has been the team’s best asset. Michigan’s all-time series lead over Penn State stands at 17-10, and the Wolverines have won the last three meetings, most recently 24-15 in 2023.

For futures, the stakes are lower than usual for this rivalry. Neither team is a College Football Playoff factor, and the real market is about bowl eligibility and the direction of both programs. A win would keep Michigan’s season from sliding further, while a loss would push the Wolverines to 0-3 in Big Ten play and leave them fighting for six wins. Quarterback stability will likely drive Michigan’s win totals and spread lines in the coming weeks, and any move from Carr, who is still unproven over a full game, will be reflected in next week’s number.

Bettors who backed Penn State at the +6.5 number had a favorable position at halftime and into the fourth quarter, while Michigan backers needed the offense to wake up, which Carr’s entrance delivered. How the market prices Michigan’s quarterback situation next week will depend on whether the Wolverines hold on and whether Whittingham commits to Carr going forward.
