Las Vegas Aces vs Washington Mystics Prediction: A’ja Wilson and the Aces’ Road Dominance Meet Washington’s Hot Streak

The Washington Mystics have won three of their last four, but Wednesday night at CareFirst Arena they run into the WNBA’s leading scorer and a Las Vegas Aces team that has quietly won 12 of 16.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Las Vegas Aces -5.5
  • Why: A’ja Wilson’s efficiency and the Aces’ road dominance outweigh Washington’s recent home surge
  • The number to watch: Wilson is averaging 25.6 points on 52.3% shooting this season

Las Vegas rolls into Washington at 18-7, second in the league behind only Minnesota, and 11-2 away from home — a road record that ranks among the best in the WNBA this year. The Mystics, at 13-12, have found some rhythm lately, winning three of their last four including a road win at Golden State on Monday, and they’re a handful of games above where most projected them entering the season. But this is still a significant step up in competition against a team built around a four-time MVP who has barely slowed down all season.

Washington’s recent stretch has been a mixed bag underneath the winning record — a loss to Portland at home, a road loss at Golden State, then a bounce-back win two days later in the same building. That kind of inconsistency against middle-of-the-pack opponents is exactly why oddsmakers still have the Mystics as significant home underdogs against a true title contender like Las Vegas, even with the win streak on the board.

Why the Line Has Aces Bettors Feeling Good

Las Vegas opened as roughly a 5.5 to 6.5-point favorite depending on the book, with the total sitting in the 159.5-164.5 range and the Aces’ moneyline priced around -250 to -260. That’s a fairly standard price for a top-tier road team facing a middling home squad, but there’s a wrinkle: A’ja Wilson has been in and out of the injury report with an ankle issue over the past few weeks, which is part of why the number hasn’t ballooned further despite the Aces’ overall dominance. Washington has actually covered in 9 of its last 13 games against Las Vegas, so bettors leaning Mystics at home aren’t operating in a vacuum.

Recent Form

The form gap tells most of the story here — Las Vegas has been the more consistent two-way team, while Washington’s turnaround has been real but still fragile against elite competition.

Wilson’s Efficiency Is the Difference-Maker

A’ja Wilson is putting together another MVP-caliber campaign, averaging 25.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting a blistering 52.3% from the field. She’s dealt with a nagging ankle injury that cost her a handful of games earlier this month, but she returned to form quickly, stringing together multiple double-doubles once back in the lineup. Jackie Young has been a steady complementary scorer, and the Aces’ size advantage in the paint should be a real problem for a Mystics frontcourt that has been solid but not dominant defensively.

Washington counters with Sonia Citron, who has emerged as their clear top option at 17.0 points per game on 47.1% shooting, spreading the ball around with 3.4 assists a night. Brittney Sykes adds secondary scoring punch and has been the team’s primary table-setter, but Washington’s supporting cast doesn’t have anyone who matches up cleanly with Wilson inside.

Wilson is shooting 52.3% from the field this season while anchoring a defense that has helped Las Vegas post an 11-2 road record.

That combination of interior scoring efficiency and away-game consistency is exactly the kind of profile that travels well against a Mystics team playing its fourth game in nine days. Fatigue could matter in the fourth quarter, especially if Washington tries to lean on Citron for 35-plus minutes again.

Kiki Iriafen has quietly been Washington’s best rebounder and a key second-chance-points contributor, but the Mystics simply don’t have a shot-blocking presence to match Wilson at the rim. Las Vegas has been getting to the free-throw line at a healthy clip in recent games too, which matters against a Washington defense that has struggled at times to avoid foul trouble against bigger frontcourts.

Shot selection could also swing this one. Washington has leaned heavily on Citron and Sykes creating off the dribble, but neither is a knockdown three-point shooter this season, and if the Aces can force Washington into contested mid-range looks, Las Vegas’ size advantage compounds in the fourth quarter when legs get heavy.

Prediction and Best Bet

Las Vegas has the size, the star power and the road pedigree to control this one from the opening tip, even with Washington playing with genuine confidence right now. Expect the Aces’ interior scoring to be the separator down the stretch.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Las Vegas Aces 88, Washington Mystics 79
  2. Best Bet: Las Vegas Aces -5.5

Wilson’s efficiency and Las Vegas’ road success make the Aces the safer side, even against a Mystics squad that’s playing better basketball than its record suggested a month ago.
