Jaylen Mbakwe Released From Hospital After Scary Stretcher Exit in Georgia Tech’s Loss to Tennessee

Georgia Tech defensive back Jaylen Mbakwe was released from Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta on Sunday, a day after he was taken off the field on a stretcher during the Yellow Jackets’ 45-24 loss to No. 18 Tennessee. Mbakwe collided head-first with the knee of teammate Jordan Walker while attempting a tackle in the third quarter, and both players did not return to the game.

Mbakwe, a Birmingham-area native who transferred to Georgia Tech after two seasons at Alabama, is playing his first year with the Yellow Jackets. He had been a key piece of the secondary early in the season, with Brent Key noting after the loss that Mbakwe had helped limit Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis in Georgia Tech’s season-opening defeat the week prior. He had one tackle before exiting Saturday’s game.

A Scary Scene at Bobby Dodd Stadium

The collision happened with 14:17 left in the third quarter and Tennessee driving with a 24-10 lead. Mbakwe lay motionless on the field for several minutes before giving fans a thumbs-up as trainers prepared to move him. He was placed on a stretcher, exchanged a handshake with Key, pointed skyward, and was taken by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital, roughly three miles from the stadium.

Walker, a defensive end, was also hurt on the same play and had to be carried off the field, unable to put any weight on his leg. Neither player returned, and Tennessee scored on the ensuing possession en route to the 21-point win.

Key addressed Mbakwe’s condition immediately after the game. “Everything was moving when they moved him off the field. He was talking, responsive,” Key told reporters. “Obviously, I’m not going to speak anything medically about it, because I don’t know. As soon as I walk out of here, that’s where I’m going — to check on my guy.”

Georgia Tech confirmed Sunday that Mbakwe was evaluated overnight and released from the hospital following precautionary observation. “Jaylen and Georgia Tech appreciate all who have taken the time to express concern and support,” the program said in a statement. Mbakwe posted his own update on social media in the early hours of Sunday morning, writing that he is “fine and feeling well” and calling the injury a “minor setback for a major comeback.” He added that the Yellow Jackets’ season goals “are still right in front of us.”

It remains unclear whether Mbakwe or Walker will miss time, or for how long, as Georgia Tech has not released a specific diagnosis for either player.
