Guardians vs. Rays Prediction: Nick Martinez Has Cleveland’s Number Again

Nick Martinez has quietly turned into a Guardians killer, and Cleveland has to solve him again on Saturday night in St. Petersburg with its season already teetering.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Tampa Bay Rays -1.5
  • Why: Nick Martinez has owned this matchup and Cleveland’s offense has nothing going right now
  • The number to watch: Martinez is 9-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 2026, and the Rays are up 3-1 in the season series

Cleveland arrives at George M. Steinbrenner Field losers of three straight and stuck at 47-45, a game and a half back in the AL Central and sliding in the wrong direction at the worst possible time. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has been the AL’s best story for months — a 53-36 record has them running away with the East, and they’ve won 7 of their last 10 to keep the pressure on. This is Game 2 of a three-game set, and after Friday’s opener, the Guardians need to find an answer fast or this series slips away entirely.

Why the Market Is Leaning Tampa Bay

Books have the Rays as solid home favorites here, with the moneyline settling around -134 for Tampa Bay and +116 for Cleveland, and the total sitting at 7.5 runs. That’s not an overreaction — it’s built on a real starting pitching gap. Nick Martinez has been one of the more underrated arms in the American League all year, and the market is pricing this the same way it has most of this season series: lean Tampa Bay, lean the under, and respect the run line.

Cleveland’s last 10 games tell the story of a team that’s still hitting a bit (.276 average) but getting outscored anyway, while Tampa Bay has cooled slightly off its torrid summer pace but is still the more complete team night to night.

The Martinez Problem Cleveland Can’t Solve

Tanner Bibee gets the ball for the Guardians and enters at 4-9 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.15 WHIP — solid enough, but he’s 1-3 in five career starts against this specific Rays lineup, and Tampa Bay has feasted on him in this rivalry. Martinez, on the other hand, is 9-2 in 20 starts with a 2.59 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, and the Rays are 15-4 in his outings this season. That’s not a small-sample fluke at this point — it’s a full season of evidence that Tampa Bay wins when he’s on the mound, regardless of opponent.

Offensively, Tampa Bay’s lineup is built around Yandy Diaz, who’s having an MVP-caliber year at .331/.404/.536 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI, and Junior Caminero, who’s added pop at third base with 14 homers and a .278 average. Cleveland counters with Angel Martinez (11 HR, .240) and outfielder Chase DeLauter, who’s quietly put together a productive rookie campaign with 7 home runs and 34 RBI while hitting .254. DeLauter’s been a steadying presence in a lineup that’s otherwise scuffled against quality right-handed pitching, which is exactly what he’s staring down Saturday.

The Rays are 15-4 in Nick Martinez’s 20 starts this season.

That win rate isn’t about Martinez racking up strikeouts — he’s not overpowering anyone with 62 K’s in 111.1 innings. It’s about efficiency and soft contact, the same formula that shut Cleveland out back in April when he worked deep into the eighth on just 78 pitches while needing only 78 total. Cleveland’s lineup has to be more patient and disciplined than it’s shown recently, because chasing early against Martinez has been a losing proposition for the Guardians all year, and it’s a big reason Tampa Bay leads this season series 3-1 heading into Saturday.

Cleveland’s bullpen adds another layer of concern. The Guardians have already lost late-inning arms Carlos Hernandez and Erik Sabrowski to the injured list this season, thinning a relief corps that needs to be sharp if Bibee can’t work deep into the game against a patient Rays lineup. Tampa Bay’s pitching staff has its own injury questions in the bullpen, but with Martinez expected to eat innings, manager Kevin Cash won’t need to lean on it nearly as hard as Cleveland will.

Add in that Tampa Bay is up 3-1 in the season series, and the pattern becomes hard to ignore. Cleveland’s pitching staff has actually held up its end reasonably well this year, ranking fifth in the AL with a 3.78 collective ERA, but a three-game losing streak means the offense has to be the thing that changes, and Martinez is the wrong opponent to bank on that happening against.

Prediction and Best Bet

Tampa Bay’s pitching advantage and recent dominance in this series make them the play, and with Cleveland cold and facing a pitcher who’s given them fits all season, the Rays should be able to control this one from the mound. If you’re looking to build out a same-game parlay with a run line included, a DraftKings promo code can help stretch that first bet further.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays 5, Cleveland Guardians 2
  2. Best Bet: Rays -1.5 on the run line

Martinez has been the Guardians’ kryptonite all year, and there’s no reason to expect Saturday night to look any different.
