Five-Star QB Donald Tabron II Picks Texas A&M Over LSU, Oregon as Elko’s Recruiting Machine Rolls On

Texas A&M landed the top quarterback prize of the 2028 recruiting cycle on Saturday when Donald Tabron II, a five-star pocket passer out of Detroit Cass Tech, committed to the Aggies at a hometown event in his native Michigan. Tabron chose Mike Elko’s program over finalists LSU and Oregon, capping off a recruitment that included official visits to all three schools in June.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Tabron is rated the No. 3 quarterback and No. 29 overall prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite for the 2028 class, with Rivals also slotting him third among passers at his position. He’s a junior who won’t play his first college snap for nearly two years, but the pledge lands at a moment when Texas A&M’s recruiting operation is drawing national attention for reasons well beyond one commitment.

A Second Straight Michigan Pipeline Hit for Elko

Tabron isn’t the first Michigan prospect to pick College Station under Elko. He joins Dexter tight end Holden Niemi, who committed to the Aggies in the previous cycle, giving Texas A&M back-to-back verbal commitments from top-ranked players out of the state. That’s a notable trend for a program that has traditionally recruited its roster primarily out of Texas and the broader Southeast.

Tabron specifically credited offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch as central to his decision, and he later told 247Sports insider Tom Loy that he’s fully bought into the program’s trajectory, referencing the “Elko era” directly when explaining his commitment. He’s the second pledge in the Aggies’ 2028 class and, notably, their highest-rated quarterback commit since Conner Weigman, the five-star headliner of Texas A&M’s heralded 2022 class.

The timing matters. Tabron announced his decision less than two weeks before his own senior prep season kicks off, and it arrives while Texas A&M is simultaneously putting the finishing touches on a 2027 class that outlets including 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN all rank No. 1 nationally. That class already includes a nation-high haul of five-star prospects headlined by offensive tackle Mark Matthews and safety Kamauri Dorsey, several of whom have used similar “Elko era” language when explaining their own commitments. Landing a blue-chip quarterback commitment in the following cycle, before that 2027 class has even signed, signals a recruiting pipeline that’s compounding rather than plateauing.

What It Signals for Aggies Futures Markets

Recruiting rankings and win totals operate on different timelines — Tabron won’t suit up for the Aggies until at least 2028 — but sustained recruiting momentum is exactly the kind of signal futures markets and win-total setters watch closely when projecting a program’s medium-term trajectory. Texas A&M enters this season with a national championship price in the +1800 to +2200 range depending on the book, an SEC title line in the +825 to +850 neighborhood, and a regular-season win total set at 8.5, coming off an 11-2 finish in 2025 under Elko. Polymarket has priced the Aggies at roughly a 4% implied probability to win it all this season, tied for ninth nationally.

None of those numbers move because of a 2028 prospect’s decision on a Saturday in August. But a program stacking a unanimous No. 1 class in 2027 on top of the headline quarterback get of the 2028 cycle is precisely the kind of sustained pipeline strength that sportsbooks and futures markets tend to price in gradually over multiple seasons — the same forward-looking momentum that shaped Texas A&M’s climb into the top 10 of preseason national title odds this year in the first place. For bettors tracking longer-term program-strength markets rather than single-week lines, Tabron’s commitment is another data point reinforcing that Texas A&M’s roster-building infrastructure under Elko is trending in a direction books are already starting to respect.
