Dodgers vs. Mets Prediction: Best Bet for Friday’s Citi Field Opener

The best record in baseball rolls into Queens to face a Mets team that’s lost its season, and this Citi Field opener is less “who wins” than “how ugly does it get.”

Quick take:

  • Pick: Dodgers moneyline
  • Why: LA brings a plus-153 run differential and a red-hot recent stretch into a series against a Mets club that’s lost the plot in the second half
  • The number to watch: Roki Sasaki’s 4.98 ERA against a Mets lineup hitting just .234 as a team

Los Angeles arrives at 65-38, first in the National League West and the best run differential in the sport at plus-153, having outscored opponents 526-373 on the year. New York, meanwhile, sits at 43-60, buried in last place in the NL East with a minus-63 run differential. This series was circled as a measuring-stick matchup back when the Mets were preseason World Series contenders. It’s turned into something closer to playoff prep for the Dodgers and a summer to forget in Flushing.

Why the Odds Favor LA Even With Sasaki on the Mound

Books have the Dodgers as clear favorites for Friday’s opener, and the market isn’t just leaning on reputation — it’s leaning on form. Roki Sasaki gets the ball for LA carrying a 4.98 ERA, hardly dominant, but he’s coming off a run of Dodgers wins where the offense has bailed out shaky pitching lines all month. Sean Manaea starts for the Mets sporting a 4.74 ERA of his own, so this isn’t a pitching duel so much as a bet on which lineup does more with mediocre stuff. Juan Soto is a notable “over 0.5 RBIs” lean in the prop market at plus-155, a sign the books expect the Dodgers to score early and often. Recent Form

The Dodgers have won series against San Diego, Minnesota and Oakland recently, plus a gritty 2-1 win over the Yankees and another 2-1 road win at Philadelphia — exactly the kind of one-run games good teams find ways to win. The Mets, by contrast, split their last two against Milwaukee, an 8-3 loss followed by a 4-0 shutout win, which about sums up their season: flashes of competence buried in far more forgettable nights.

A Lineup Gap That’s Hard to Bet Against

The Dodgers are hitting .260 as a team with 129 home runs and a 3.50 ERA, while the Mets check in at .234 with 117 homers and a bloated 4.30 team ERA. That gap shows up every time these two play — LA swept the season series in April, winning 8-2, 2-1 and 4-0 without much resistance. New York’s lineup also has real absences to work around: Francisco Lindor is questionable with a hand issue, and Marcus Semien remains out with a strained hip flexor that’s kept him off the field since late June. Losing your shortstop and your projected everyday second baseman from the same infield in the same stretch is not how a last-place team digs out.

Los Angeles isn’t fully healthy either. Blake Snell was scratched from a scheduled start, and the rotation is thin behind Yamamoto and Sasaki with Tyler Glasnow and Gavin Stone both still on the 60-day injured list. But even a battered Dodgers pitching staff has an offense capable of covering for it, something the Mets simply don’t have right now.

The Dodgers have won 63.3% of games this season when they’re the moneyline favorite — and they’re a heavy favorite again here.

Nolan McLean has quietly been the Mets’ best arm this year, sitting at a 3.34 ERA over more than 100 innings, and he doesn’t pitch until Saturday. Friday’s Manaea start doesn’t carry the same weight of confidence, and against this lineup, that matters.

New York still has bright spots. Their bullpen has shown life in low-leverage innings, and Juan Soto’s counterpart bats — namely Pete Alonso — remain capable of erasing a deficit with one swing. But erasing a deficit against a Dodgers pitching staff that just held the Padres to two runs and blanked San Diego 3-0 earlier this month is a tall order for a team already 21 games under .500.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Dodgers’ offense, their bullpen depth, and a Mets team playing without two key infielders all point the same direction. This has the look of a comfortable LA win to open the series, even with Sasaki’s modest ERA on the mound.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Dodgers 6, Mets 2
  2. Best Bet: Dodgers on the moneyline

When one team has the best run differential in baseball and the other is missing its shortstop and second baseman, the safer side of this line is clear.
