The Dodgers have dropped the first two games of this series in agonizing fashion, and now they send their ace to the mound in Atlanta with a chance to avoid the sweep.
Quick take:
- Pick: Braves +1.5
- Why: Atlanta has the pitching edge and the momentum after stealing two straight one-run games from the NL West leaders
- The number to watch: Chris Sale’s 2.20 ERA, the best mark of any starter in this series
Los Angeles arrived at Truist Park sitting comfortably atop the NL West at 80-53, while Atlanta has quietly climbed back to 78-55 and first place in the NL East. But the last two nights have flipped the emotional weight of this series. The Braves won Tuesday 4-3 and followed it up with a wild 6-5 walk-off-adjacent finish on Wednesday, rallying from a 3-1 deficit to beat a Dodgers bullpen that’s been stretched thin all month. Thursday night is the finale, and it’s Chris Sale against Yoshinobu Yamamoto — as good a pitching matchup as you’ll see anywhere in baseball this week.
The opening odds tell the story of two teams trending in opposite directions within the same three games. Atlanta opened as a moneyline favorite at -118 with Los Angeles at +100, even though the Dodgers still own the better overall record. The Braves are also getting run as the runline underdog at +1.5 (-220), while the Dodgers are -1.5 (+180) trying to cover as true road favorites. The total sits at 7, split -102/-120 over-under, reflecting two lineups that have combined for 19 runs across the first two games of this set.

Chris Sale enters at 12-9 with a 2.20 ERA, and he’s been the steadiest arm in either rotation over the past two months. Yamamoto isn’t far behind at 12-7 with a 2.61 ERA and a striking 8.60 K/9, backed by a 0.897 WHIP that ranks among the best in the National League. On pure stuff, this is close to even. Where it tilts is depth: the Dodgers are without center fielder Andy Pages, who had surgery on a fractured left hand and is expected to miss another few weeks, and catcher Will Smith is only just working his way back from a rehab assignment after missing more than two months with neck inflammation. Tommy Edman, meanwhile, has been ice-cold in August, hitting .187 with a 5:18 walk-to-strikeout ratio over his last 21 games — exactly the kind of soft spot a Sale start can exploit.
Atlanta isn’t fully healthy either. The Braves are still without Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach, both nursing elbow issues that have gutted their rotation depth for months, and closer Robert Suarez remains sidelined. But their lineup is whole and rolling. Matt Olson has been a steady middle-of-the-order force all season, and Ronald Acuña Jr. gives Atlanta a game-changing top-of-the-order threat that Los Angeles hasn’t found an answer for in this series — Acuña reached base multiple times in each of the first two games. Freddie Freeman, who spent parts of his Hall of Fame-caliber career in Atlanta’s system before starring for the Dodgers, has actually been the one torturing his current team’s opponent this week, doubling and driving in runs in both losses.
The Dodgers bullpen has now blown leads in back-to-back games in this series, turning a strong start into two losses.
That’s the real story here. Los Angeles is missing Edwin Díaz (neck), Blake Treinen (elbow) and Justin Wrobleski (forearm) from a relief corps that was already thin, and it showed both Tuesday and Wednesday when late-inning leads evaporated. If Yamamoto gives them six or seven strong innings Thursday, the question becomes whether that beleaguered bullpen can actually hold a lead for the first time in this series. Atlanta’s relief group, even without Suárez, has been the group getting the job done in the ninth inning all week.
This game likely comes down to which bullpen blinks first, and the Braves have already proven twice this week they’re the ones better equipped to finish. Sale should keep Los Angeles’ banged-up lineup in check long enough for Atlanta’s offense, paced by Acuña and Olson, to build a manageable lead — and manageable leads have been safe hands for the Braves’ relievers in this series.
The pick:
Back Atlanta to complete the sweep — the pitching matchup is close enough, but the bullpen gap isn’t, and that’s where this series has actually been decided.
