Cubs vs. Diamondbacks Prediction: Chicago Looks to Take the Series Finale at Chase Field

The Cubs already dropped the middle game of this series after cruising in the opener, and now Chicago has to prove that 7-0 blowout wasn’t a mirage against a Diamondbacks club that just won’t go away in the NL West race.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Chicago Cubs -1.5
  • Why: Eduardo Rodriguez is red-hot, but the Cubs’ lineup has scored 5.2 runs a game all season and gets a fatigued Arizona bullpen that’s been outscored by nine runs over its last 10
  • The number to watch: Cubs +14 run differential over their last 10 games versus Arizona’s -9

Chicago sits second in the NL Central at 76-56 and still has a real shot at overtaking Milwaukee, while Arizona is clinging to third in the West at 69-63, playing out the string of a season that’s slipped further away every week. This rubber match at Chase Field carries more juice than a typical Wednesday afternoon getaway game because both teams need it — Chicago to keep pace, Arizona to avoid a sweep-adjacent gut punch in front of its home crowd.

The Diamondbacks took Tuesday’s game 5-4 to even the series after getting run out of the building 7-0 in the opener. That kind of split says a lot about this matchup: neither team is dominant, but Chicago’s floor is higher.

The Odds Tell a Tighter Story Than the Talent Gap Suggests

Books have this closer to a coin flip than the standings might imply, with the Cubs sitting around -1.5 on the run line and hovering near even money on the moneyline depending on the book. That’s Arizona’s home-field advantage and Eduardo Rodriguez’s arm doing a lot of the lifting — without him on the mound, this line probably shifts several notches in Chicago’s favor. The total sits at 8.5, a number that reflects two lineups that can score in bunches when the ball gets in the air, even with a couple of key bats missing.

Boyd vs. Rodriguez Is the Real Storyline

Eduardo Rodriguez has been Arizona’s best pitcher by a wide margin this year, sitting at 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 155 innings, with 110 strikeouts against just 49 walks. He’s the reason this line isn’t more lopsided toward Chicago. Matthew Boyd counters at 8-2 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 91 innings — a serviceable but hittable outing profile that’s given up 14 home runs already.

The bigger factor might be what’s missing from each lineup. Arizona is playing without Ketel Marte, who’s out with knee inflammation and isn’t expected back until around September 1, robbing the Diamondbacks of their best table-setter. Nolan Arenado has carried the offense in his absence, leading the team with 21 home runs and a .439 slugging mark, and Gabriel Moreno has quietly been excellent at .303 with a strong OPS from the catcher spot. Chicago, meanwhile, is without shortstop Dansby Swanson (oblique strain, expected out into September), but the middle of the order hasn’t missed a beat — Pete Crow-Armstrong has been one of the best players in baseball this season at .278 with 33 home runs, 83 RBI, and 32 stolen bases, even though he’s gone quiet in this series with just one hit over his last two games. Alex Bregman has picked up the slack, going 11-for-40 with three homers over his last 10 games.

The Cubs have outscored opponents by 14 runs over their last 10 games while the Diamondbacks have been outscored by nine — a 23-run swing in form heading into a series finale.

That gap matters more than the identical 5-5 records suggest. Arizona’s pitching staff has posted a 5.32 ERA over that stretch, a number that’s hard to trust against a Cubs lineup that ranks in the top five in the league in OPS. Chicago’s staff ERA over the same window sits nearly a run and a half lower at 3.98, even accounting for Boyd’s inconsistency start to start.

Home cooking has helped Arizona stay afloat, and Chase Field’s hitter-friendly dimensions mean this game is unlikely to turn into a pitchers’ duel no matter who’s on the mound.

Prediction and Best Bet

Rodriguez keeps this competitive into the middle innings, but the absence of Marte catches up to Arizona’s offense against a Cubs bullpen that’s been steady all year. Chicago’s superior underlying form and a lineup with fewer weak spots should be enough to take the series.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Chicago Cubs 6, Arizona Diamondbacks 3
  2. Best Bet: Cubs on the run line (-1.5)

With Arizona banged up at the top of its order and Chicago riding the better recent form by a wide margin, the value here is on the Cubs covering rather than just winning outright. For a full market breakdown before first pitch, check the live MLB odds page.
