Chivas Ends Puma Era, Unveils Bold New Nike Jersey to Chase U.S. Fans Ahead of Apertura 2026

Chivas de Guadalajara set off a wave of buzz across Mexican soccer this week, officially unveiling its new Nike jersey on August 5 and closing the book on a Puma sponsorship that had defined the club’s look for the better part of a decade. The launch immediately became one of the day’s biggest trending topics in the United States, powered by a design overhaul and a clear strategic push to win over the club’s massive Mexican-American fan base ahead of the Apertura 2026 stretch run.

Chivas is one of Liga MX’s most storied and popular clubs, known for fielding rosters composed entirely of Mexican-born players and commanding one of the largest fan bases in the sport worldwide. The Puma partnership had outfitted the Rebano Sagrado through several tournament titles and international runs, but the switch to Nike marks a new commercial era for the club — one that arrives alongside a broader shakeup across Liga MX’s biggest brands, with rivals Club America and Pumas UNAM also parting ways with their own longtime kit suppliers around the same period.

A New Look Built for U.S. Crowds

The new kit’s official debut is set for Chivas’ Leagues Cup 2026 match against LAFC, a matchup the club specifically chose to spotlight its new gear in front of one of its most passionate audiences outside of Mexico. That scheduling decision underscores the real intent behind the switch: Chivas and Nike are betting heavily on growing the brand’s footprint among Mexican-American supporters, a demographic that has become increasingly valuable for both Liga MX clubs and the American sports apparel giants competing for their business. Fans hoping to follow along with betting markets tied to Liga MX and other soccer competitions can track Champions League odds and other soccer lines throughout the season.

The multi-year Nike deal represents the most significant equipment change for the club in years, and early reaction across social media has been largely enthusiastic, with supporters dissecting every detail of the new home and away designs. For a club with Chivas’ cultural weight in Mexican soccer, a jersey launch of this scale functions as much as a marketing event as it does an on-field update — and the club clearly leaned into that with the LAFC showcase.

Roster Turnover Adds to the Storylines

The jersey unveiling lands during a turbulent stretch for the club on the personnel side as well. Midfielder Erick Gutierrez departed for a loan move to Toluca after falling out of coach Gabriel Milito’s plans, having not played a single minute for Chivas during the Clausura 2026 tournament despite five years of experience in Europe with PSV Eindhoven. Toluca, fresh off a Concacaf Champions Cup title and back-to-back Liga MX championships, moved to add Gutierrez as insurance following a knee injury to midfielder Marcel Ruiz.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Raul “Tala” Rangel remains one of the most closely watched players on the current Chivas roster, with reports linking him to European clubs including Sporting Lisbon, Feyenoord, and FC Copenhagen. Rangel has established himself as a strong candidate to become Mexico’s starting goalkeeper heading into the next World Cup cycle, and his rising profile has made him a target for scouts across multiple European leagues. Chivas has not indicated any urgency to move him, but a departure before his contract situation solidifies further would represent one of the more significant transfers to come out of Liga MX in recent memory.

Chivas opened Apertura 2026 with a 2-0 home loss to Toluca at Estadio Akron, an early setback that has already drawn scrutiny toward Milito’s project just one match into the new campaign. The club will look to its new Nike identity — and the depth still remaining on its roster — to help turn the tournament around as the schedule progresses. With the LAFC showcase match still ahead and continued speculation surrounding Rangel’s future, Chivas figures to remain a fixture in the soccer conversation on both sides of the border well beyond this week’s jersey reveal.
