Michigan has benched Bryce Underwood ahead of its game against Indiana.
Michigan is expected to start true freshman Tommy Carr at quarterback on Saturday against No. 6 Indiana, with sophomore Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, set to remain on the bench after being pulled at halftime of last week’s win over Penn State. The Wolverines have not formally announced the change, but CBS Sports and On3 both report that Carr will make his first collegiate start in Ann Arbor, and the move has already set off a wave of transfer portal speculation around Underwood.
The decision came on Oct. 17 at Michigan Stadium, when first-year coach Kyle Whittingham sent Carr out for the opening drive of the second half with his offense trailing Penn State 3-0. Underwood had completed just 5 of 11 passes for 43 yards and two interceptions in the first half, and Michigan had managed only 80 total yards. Carr sparked a 21-18 comeback win, and Whittingham has declined to tip his hand publicly this week, saying only that the decision has been made.
Carr finished 5 of 7 for 47 yards through the air and added 36 rushing yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run with 2:58 left that helped seal the victory. He is a four-star recruit from the 2026 class, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, and the younger brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr. Michigan (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) leaned heavily on its running game after the switch, with Bryson Kuzdzal’s 43-yard touchdown run and a Jordan Marshall score doing much of the damage.
For Underwood, the numbers have been a struggle. Through Michigan’s first five games he completed 59.3% of his passes for 881 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions, then threw two more picks against Penn State. As a freshman in 2025 he threw for 2,428 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He signed a lucrative NIL deal with the school, which has added to the attention around the benching.
Nothing is official on his future. Underwood has not requested a transfer, and outlets including Sports Illustrated have stressed that speculation is not the same as a decision. Still, CBS Sports, 247Sports, Yahoo Sports and others have already floated possible landing spots if he does enter the portal after the season. One CBS writer suggested a program like Houston, where Connor Weigman has revived his career, could be a good fit. A 247Sports report quoted a Big Ten source who said he would be very hesitant about adding Underwood at a Power Four school, while a Big 12 general manager questioned whether he would even want to drop down in level.
If you are new to betting, a point spread is the number of points a team is expected to win or lose by, and a moneyline is a simple bet on who wins the game outright. For Saturday’s noon kickoff on Fox, Indiana (6-1) is a roughly seven-point road favorite. Most listed lines sit at Indiana -7, with some spots at -6.5 or -7.5, and the over/under is 41.5 points. Moneyline prices from one market tracker show Indiana at -278 and Michigan at +225, which means oddsmakers see an Indiana win as the far more likely result.
The spread has barely budged even as the quarterback news spread, and that is worth noting. The market appears to be treating Carr as a modest step forward or at worst a neutral change, not a game-changing swing. It also reflects how little separates the two quarterbacks as passers so far this season, since Michigan’s offense has been built around the run.
Michigan’s recent betting record explains some of the skepticism. The Wolverines lost 20-14 at Minnesota as a 6.5-point favorite on Oct. 3, and they were also listed as a 6.5-point favorite against Penn State and won by only three points, which means they did not cover. One betting trends page lists Michigan as covering the spread in just 3 of its last 12 games.
The futures market has already moved on from Michigan as a contender. As of mid-October, one sportsbook-published futures board listed the Wolverines at +17500 to win the Big Ten, +2000 to make the College Football Playoff and +100000 to win the national championship, with Ohio State and Indiana far ahead of them in the conference race. Pro Football Network’s projection model, updated Oct. 21, gives Michigan just a 0.6% chance of making the playoff and a 0.1% chance of winning the Big Ten. Those long odds mean the quarterback change is more about stabilizing the season and building toward 2027 than a title push.
The bigger market to watch may come later. Michigan beat writers have already pointed out how costly the Underwood experiment has been for the program, and the case is being used as a cautionary tale about paying top dollar for recruits before they are ready. If Underwood does enter the portal, his demand will show how much teams value raw talent against poor on-field results. For now, the first test is Carr on Saturday against one of the top teams in the Big Ten, and bettors and fans alike will see quickly whether the freshman is the answer.
