Brewers vs. Pirates Prediction: Milwaukee Looks to Ride Logan Henderson’s Dominance at PNC Park

The Brewers have already clinched a fourth straight NL Central title and the best record in baseball, but Pittsburgh keeps playing spoiler, and Wednesday night at PNC Park sets up a genuine test of whether Milwaukee’s motivation is still where it needs to be with October two weeks away.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Brewers -1.5
  • Why: Logan Henderson has been the best pitcher in baseball not named Skenes this month, and Milwaukee just took the series opener behind a dominant bullpen effort
  • The number to watch: Henderson’s 2.34 ERA and 99 strikeouts across his last 10-plus starts

Milwaukee (94-57) rolls into Pittsburgh with nothing left to clinch and everything to protect, still chasing the Dodgers for the best record in baseball by a game and a half. The Pirates (75-76) are in full spoiler mode, having won six of their last 10 and taking two of three from the Brewers in the previous series, including a gritty 4-3 win over the Cubs last weekend that kept their pride intact even with the season circling the drain.

Milwaukee Rolls In as a Modest Favorite Despite the Gap in the Standings

Books have Milwaukee at -136 to -137 on the moneyline with a -1.5 run line priced around +122 to +130, and the total sitting at 7.5. That’s a surprisingly tight number for a team with a 19-game cushion on its opponent in the standings, and it says more about Pittsburgh’s rotation depth than anything else — the Pirates have shut teams down in bursts all September, posting a 3.27 ERA over their last 10 games even while going just 7-3 in relatively low-scoring affairs. The market isn’t buying a Milwaukee blowout, but it does like Henderson enough to lean the Brewers’ way on the run line. Henderson’s Command Is the Difference-Maker

Logan Henderson takes the mound for Milwaukee at 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA and a minuscule 0.78 WHIP, numbers that put him firmly in the Rookie of the Year and even Cy Young conversation despite pitching in the shadow of a stacked rotation. He’s given the Brewers length and swing-and-miss stuff all year, racking up 99 strikeouts and consistently working deep into games — exactly the profile that neutralizes a Pittsburgh lineup that’s been feast-or-famine, capable of an 18-hit outburst against the White Sox one night and single-digit contact totals the next.

Jared Jones counters for the Pirates at 4-6 with a 4.10 ERA, but the surface numbers undersell how he’s pitched lately. He opened September with 13 shutout innings across his first two starts of the month and a 17:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in that stretch, a huge step forward in his first full season back from UCL surgery. He’s not the same pitcher who posted a sub-3.00 ERA as a rookie, but he’s trending in the right direction at the right time for a Pittsburgh team trying to finish strong.

Henderson has allowed two earned runs or fewer in nine of his last 11 starts.

That kind of consistency is hard to find anywhere in baseball right now, let alone from a starter who wasn’t even a household name entering the season. Brice Turang has been part of the supporting cast making Milwaukee’s rotation look even better than it is — he’s hitting .261 with 18 home runs and an .795 OPS, providing steady table-setting at the top of the order and Gold Glove-caliber defense up the middle that’s bailed out Brewers starters all year.

Pittsburgh’s bullpen has quietly stabilized too, with Yohan Ramírez and Gregory Soto both sitting with ERAs near 3.00 in high-leverage work down the stretch. That gives the Pirates a puncher’s chance to keep this one close into the seventh or eighth inning even if Jones exits with a slim deficit.

Prediction and Best Bet

Milwaukee’s lineup has enough thump to push across a couple of runs against Jones early, and Henderson’s command should be enough to keep Pittsburgh’s offense off-balance for six-plus innings. The Pirates have shown fight all September, but asking them to solve a pitcher performing like Henderson two nights in a row is a tall order.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Brewers 5, Pirates 2
  2. Best Bet: Brewers -1.5

Henderson’s been this good for two months running, and betting against him in a spot where Milwaukee still has real stakes in the overall-record race feels like fading the wrong side.
