The Dodgers just tagged Atlanta’s bullpen for three homers in a series-opening win, and now the Braves have to find a way to even the series before this thing turns into a laugher.
Quick take:
- Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -158
- Why: Blake Snell has been nearly untouchable this October, and Atlanta’s probable starter is working on fumes.
- The number to watch: 0.86 — Snell’s ERA across three starts in last year’s playoff run with the Dodgers.
Atlanta dropped Game 1 5-3 on Saturday despite three scoreless innings from opener Dylan Dodd, as Tarik Skubal cruised through six innings in triple-digit heat and the Dodgers bullpen did the rest. Teoscar Hernández, Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy all went deep, and the Braves’ relief corps allowed four runs over the final innings before Ozzie Albies’ two-run shot in the ninth made the final score respectable. Now L.A. gets a chance to put a stranglehold on the series at Dodger Stadium, where teams that take a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five have gone on to win 89% of the time.
The Dodgers are favored at -158 on the moneyline with the total sitting at 7.5 runs, a line you can track alongside the rest of the live MLB odds board, and the market reaction makes sense once you look at who’s on the mound. Blake Snell gets the ball for L.A. after posting an 11.6 K/9 this season — sixth-best among MLB starters with at least 40 innings — and he’s been lights-out in October before, pitching to a 0.86 ERA across three starts in last year’s NLCS run before his World Series outings went sideways. Atlanta, meanwhile, hasn’t even named a starter. Chris Sale is the presumed choice after closing out the Wild Card clincher Thursday, but he’s thrown 116 pitches across two outings in less than a week, and manager Walt Weiss admitted postgame Saturday the decision still wasn’t final.

Atlanta’s issue isn’t talent, it’s exhaustion. Sale is a 37-year-old lefty being asked to pitch for the third time in six days if he takes the ball Sunday, and the last time he started on four days’ rest was back in April. If Sale can’t give the Braves length, Weiss would have to lean on Grant Holmes — who threw two innings of relief just days ago — or rookie JR Ritchie, neither an ideal matchup against a Dodgers lineup stacked with Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Kyle Tucker. On the Atlanta side, Michael Harris II has been the postseason hot hand with a .908 OPS through 17 plate appearances, and Austin Riley has followed with a .792 mark. But Matt Olson (2-for-15), Drake Baldwin (3-for-17) and Ronald Acuña Jr. (2-for-13) have all struggled to find their timing against October arms.
Atlanta won five of six regular-season meetings with the Dodgers this year — but none of those games came with a 37-year-old starter throwing on short rest in a potential must-win road game.
That regular-season head-to-head success is the one thing keeping bettors from fully writing the Braves off here. It’s also worth noting the Dodgers bullpen is fully rested after using only four relievers lightly in Game 1 — none threw more than 15 pitches — which gives Dave Roberts total freedom to play matchups if the Dodgers need length behind Snell.
History isn’t on Atlanta’s side, either. Teams that drop both Games 1 and 2 on the road in a Division Series have recovered to win the series just three times in 36 all-time chances. That stat alone explains why this game carries so much more weight than a typical Game 2 — a loss here doesn’t just put the Braves in a 2-0 hole, it puts them in close to a must-sweep-the-remaining-three position. Atlanta’s bullpen arms are rested, at least: Raisel Iglesias, Didier Fuentes, Dylan Lee and Robert Suarez all enter Sunday with two days off, giving Weiss plenty of late-inning firepower if he can scratch out a lead. The problem is getting there. Against a Dodgers lineup that can do damage from top to bottom, asking a worn-down rotation to hold the line into the sixth or seventh inning is the real swing factor in this one.
Atlanta has shown it can hang with the Dodgers over a long season, but this specific Game 2 setup — a fatigued Sale (or a replacement starter with even less margin for error) against a motivated Snell and a deep, rested bullpen — tilts hard toward Los Angeles. The Braves have been excellent at finding clutch homers late, as Albies and Murphy showed in Game 1, but needing comeback magic in back-to-back games against this roster is a tough ask.
The pick:
Snell’s track record in big October moments combined with Atlanta’s rotation uncertainty makes the Dodgers the safer side to build around tonight.
