Sam LaPorta Contract Talks Collapse: Lions TE Now Trending Toward 2027 Free Agency as Futures Market Watches Detroit’s Roster Moves

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta and the team have broken off contract extension talks, according to an Oct. 4 report from ESPN’s Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, after the two sides spent the first several weeks of the season trying to work out a long-term deal. Barring a significant breakthrough, LaPorta is now on track to reach unrestricted free agency in 2027.

LaPorta, a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract. He’s coming off a 2025 season that was cut short by a back injury that required surgery, and he’s been a steady, if secondary, piece of Detroit’s passing attack behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs through the first three weeks of 2026. Rapoport’s report notes the two sides could still revisit negotiations later this season or into the offseason, but “a deal is unlikely considering the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement over the first four weeks of the season.”

Where Things Stand for LaPorta and the Lions

Lions general manager Brad Holmes has repeatedly said he wants to keep LaPorta in Detroit for the long haul, and the team retains the option to use the franchise tag next offseason if an extension doesn’t materialize before free agency opens. That tag would be a stopgap, not a resolution, and it would come with its own cap complications for a Lions front office already managing deals for several core pieces of the roster.

Through three games this season, LaPorta has posted a 14-catch, 144-yard, one-touchdown line on 19 targets, numbers that rank third on the team behind St. Brown and Gibbs in every major receiving category. He followed up his five-catch, 48-yard day in Detroit’s overtime win over New Orleans with a six-catch, 52-yard, one-touchdown performance in a loss at Buffalo, then caught three of four targets for 44 yards in a win over the Jets. It’s a solid, TE1-caliber workload, even if the volume hasn’t matched his rookie-year ceiling, when he set the NFL record for receptions by a rookie tight end.

The bigger structural issue for Detroit is what comes after this season. All four tight ends on the current 53-man roster — LaPorta, Brock Wright, Tyler Conklin, and Jackson Meeks — are scheduled to hit free agency next offseason. Meeks is an exclusive-rights free agent, meaning the Lions control whether he returns, but Wright, Conklin, and LaPorta himself are all ticketed for unrestricted free agency. That leaves Detroit with almost no long-term certainty at the position beyond 2026, raising the stakes on whatever happens with LaPorta’s next contract.

What It Means for the Betting Market

None of this changes LaPorta’s role for the Lions this season, and it hasn’t moved the needle on Detroit’s standing in the futures market. The Lions remain favorites to win the NFC North and are priced among the better value plays in the NFC, with sportsbooks still pricing them as a top-tier conference contender behind the likes of the Rams, 49ers, and Seahawks. An unresolved contract situation at tight end is the kind of storyline that can quietly affect offseason-related markets and award conversations long before it ever touches a point spread, since oddsmakers tend to weight in-season roster continuity more heavily once team-building questions start piling up at a single position group.

Where this story could eventually matter more directly is in how it shapes Detroit’s approach over the final months of the season. A front office facing the prospect of losing its entire tight end room in one offseason has an incentive to either get a LaPorta extension done before the trade deadline chatter heats up, or to lean on the franchise tag and address the position’s depth separately in free agency and the draft. Either path has ripple effects on how LaPorta is used down the stretch — a team trying to showcase him for a tag-and-trade scenario plays him differently than one quietly building toward an extension — and that usage pattern is exactly the kind of signal that moves weekly tight end prop markets and season-long reception and yardage totals.

For now, LaPorta remains a weekly starter in an offense that still runs through St. Brown and Gibbs first, which keeps his prop numbers modest relative to his draft positioning in fantasy circles. But as the season progresses and the Lions push for a top seed in a wide-open NFC, how Holmes handles this situation — tag, trade, revived talks, or a quiet march toward 2027 free agency — will be one of the more closely watched subplots in Detroit, both for roster-building purposes and for anyone tracking how it filters into the team’s longer-range championship and award futures.
