Tampa Bay is playing its best baseball with the widest margin for error, and Houston is trying to survive September while missing its two best hitters — that combination makes this a lot more lopsided than a typical Astros-Rays series.
Quick take:
- Pick: Tampa Bay Rays -1.5
- Why: The Rays have the better lineup, the better bullpen, and Houston is walking into Tropicana Field without Yordan Alvarez in the middle of its order
- The number to watch: Junior Caminero’s .896 OPS and 39 home runs, tops on a Tampa Bay roster that’s outscored opponents by 58 runs this season
Houston (75-73) dropped the series opener 3-1 on Friday and now sits 15.5 games back in the AL West with a lineup that’s been picked apart by injuries all September. Tampa Bay (88-59) enters Saturday just three games behind the Yankees in the AL East and holding a firm grip on a playoff spot, riding one of the best home records in baseball at 48-25.
The Rays have won this series’ opener and are trying to close it out on their own turf, where they’ve been nearly unbeatable all year.
Tampa Bay opened as roughly a -140 to -144 moneyline favorite with a -1.5 run line, and the number hasn’t moved much since — books are confident in the Rays’ home-field edge and their deeper roster. Houston sits at +120 to +125 on the moneyline and +1.5 on the run line, which reflects both the road disadvantage and the absence of Alvarez, who’s dealing with a right ankle issue and wasn’t in Friday’s lineup. The total has settled around 7.5 to 8 runs, with the over getting slight juice given both offenses have been productive in September. | Saturday, September 12 at 6:11 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Houston Astros | +1.5 (-186) | +122 | O 8 (-114) |
| Tampa Bay Rays | -1.5 (138) | -143 | U 7.5 (-105) |
Houston has gone just 5-5 over its last 10 games and is currently riding a one-game losing streak after Friday’s defeat. Tampa Bay is 6-4 over the same stretch and has been one of the American League’s steadiest teams in the second half.

Isaac Paredes has been the one bright spot for Houston in September, going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in Wednesday’s loss to Philadelphia and reaching base safely in all but one game this month. He’s up to a .260/.360/.427 line with 19 home runs and 82 RBI, and he’s been Houston’s most consistent bat down the stretch. Jose Altuve also just picked up his 2,500th career hit, a nice milestone, but his overall production is down — a .244 average and a .703 OPS are modest numbers from a player who’s usually a stabilizing presence at the top of the order.
The bigger problem is who’s missing. Alvarez, Houston’s best hitter, is dealing with the ankle issue that kept him out Friday, and shortstop Carlos Correa still hasn’t returned from the ankle surgery that’s sidelined him since May. Add in Brice Matthews (knee) and relievers Steven Okert (hamstring) and Mike Burrows (elbow) still out, and Houston is patching together a lineup and bullpen at the worst possible time of year.
Tampa Bay doesn’t have that problem. Junior Caminero has quietly put together an MVP-caliber season — 39 homers, 93 RBI, a .530 slugging percentage — and Yandy Díaz has been even better lately, hitting .400 in September to go with a .305 average and 22 homers on the year. The Rays’ rotation is anchored by Drew Rasmussen, who’s sitting on a 2.88 ERA, and Nick Martinez right behind him at 2.92.
Yandy Díaz is hitting .400 in September, the best mark by any Rays hitter in franchise history for the month.
That’s the difference in this game. Houston’s lineup is thin at the top and thinner behind it with Alvarez out, while Tampa Bay is getting its best production from its best players at exactly the right time. Caminero and Díaz have been unstoppable, and a bullpen fronted by arms like Bryan Baker (1.61 ERA) gives the Rays a real advantage in the middle innings if Houston’s offense manages to scratch out a few runs early.
Tampa Bay’s combination of a deep, hot lineup and a strong home-field track record makes them the play here, especially with Houston missing its best hitter and still searching for consistency in September.
